If you say so Neil. I could have sworn I got dirty, sweaty, and showed you how to get that engine out (complete with the FI ), without destroying anything. I let you do the cutting, as you seemed to have a better idea of how to cut up a t-3. But then you were ready to call it a day at noon (and head for the AC ), and I had my dolly back together before you even came outside (and that was without my morning coffee). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah, tell Ron thanks again for me. He was a life saver. I just can't seem to get going without my morning coffee. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, it was a progressive weekend. I got the rear fenders welded up, sandblasted, and primed (inside and out). I also got both front fenders done too. In addition, I got the master cylinder plumbed to the resevior, and flushed some dot 5 to all 4 wheels. Just need to get the brake pedal stop attached, and finish bleeding the brakes (also needed another container of dot 5 fluid). Also got the hood blasted, and primed along with the cowl stripped of old paint, and primed off too. Here's some pics of the right front fender, after welding, and after being primed. The weld seam will only need minor filler if any at all. If you look toward the rear of the car, you'll see the rear fenders are also "Invasion gray". Enjoy.

Today Bob got the roof sanded, while I sanded the drip rails. My next assignment, is sanding around the front and rear window openings, and then around the door openings and then the front apron- a job for tomorrow. I got lucky with this project, because the front and rear louvers got sand blasted, so I don't have to kill my fingers trying to get the paint out of all those damn little openings. Bob also worked on the passenger door a bit, he had to heat up several sections to keep the dents from "oil canning."
Considering he's only been working on the car for about 2 and a half months, it still amazes me at how much progress he's made, and I get to see it every day. _________________ Sue

Two cars hell. I even know of some bug parts that are in that car. There are probably 4, 5 maybe even 6 cars in there.

Damn, Bob. Nice workmanship on the front fender! The body lines look great...just a little filler and voila. I'm envious of the skill & experience necessary to pull that kind of repair off. _________________ Aloha..."Eddie would go."

Thanks for the compliments guys, it helps keep you going. That front fender repair was easier than I thought it would be, and it sure beat having to do the door edge portion instead. It's mostly getting everything to line up how you want it before tacking it together. I wish the rears had come out as nice, but they were pretty beat to start with, and their lines didn't quite line up to start with. I've still got to play with them a little more, then I'll add some filler to them. Last night I worked on the pasenger door for over 4 hours, and I still can't get that damn oil canning out of it, so I guess it beat me (after 6+ hours of work), I'm going to replace that door with one from out back that's relatively clean and straight. I didn't know if it could have been saved before I started, but I at least wanted to try first, as it had a pretty good dent down low in the middle of the door. At least the roof got primed off, so it wasn't a toal loss.
Yes, I do want a nice solid car to take to the Invasion, and this thing's pretty solid right now, just needs a little more straightening. Still trying to decide between Peru green, and Nutria brown. I'm actually liking the brown color on the Notch body, after looking at a bunch of different Notchbacks in the Reader's rides section. I'm also thinking about building a trailer hitch for it, in case I want to haul a small light weight trailer. Since I have to rebuild the rear bumper mounts, I might as well add some plates for a trailer hitch mount while I'm there.
Yeah, by my count, it's got about 5 or 6 cars worth of parts in it so far. Most of the sheet metal on the outside is 71 with the exception of the 64 to 66 Notch rear fenders. I did cut one car in half, and graft the other half back in though, so it could be 2 cars making one. The pan is 71, along with some bug pan sections (Thanks Russ), cut to fit, to fix the rust that was in the pan halfs, and the front beam I don't know, as it was laying on the ground at Neil's.
I'm actually getting ready to wire the front half back up, and do some of the under dash wiring too, as it stilll needs to be done. I guess that's why I don't post much, too busy getting stuff done. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Not really a full shop. Just a nice air compressor, an 18 year mig welder, some air tools, and the latest aquistion a small TIG welder for doing small jobs and aluminum work. Oh yes, and a made in china body hammer and dolly set. The most used tool out there is me, and what I've learned playing around with cars for the last 20+ years. Raising 2 kids, and making a house payment, and going to school, you can't afford to pay someone else to do the work, so you learn on your own stuff, and help others when you can. Don't get me wrong, I can't do carpentry (whenever I cut wood, it comes out too small, even when I cut twice ), and what's up with a 2 by 4 being 1 1/2 by 3 1/2?? I think that kind of stuff messes me up more than anything. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Any of it early? Still looking for a good pair of fronts, even if they need a graft job, and I know you've got an early hood or 2 out there. I know I still need a rear apron (the upper half for sure), as the one on the Notch has been visited by the "bondo meister", and he was creative, but it's aimed a little too low in the middle for my taste (at the trunk lid gap), not to mention it's stuffed with bondo. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I got a couple of early fronts off a 65. They have a little rust, but not beyond your skills. I got them in that pile of "free" stuff I picked up.
I want to keep the lights and chrome off them. I need them for the 66 FB. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

i use the torch and heat up a 6 inch area, swirling inward slowly to a 1 INCH AREA UNTIL I SEE A LITTLE COLOR CHANGE COME UP. THAN I GRAB (sorry) than i grab a wet rag. and do the same thing but much slower watching the metal pull out, as i swirl in. when i see it pulling i move quicker to the center. all the time moving the rag to keep the wet on the metal _________________ currently 71 super auto-stick, 73 ghia, 71 yellow ghia , a 68 square w71 fi, a 77 bus station wagon deluxe. and finaly finaly a 74 riveria with volvo pawer .ITS AN ADDICTION!!! |
