Been busy working on the 71 Notch

I have one of those too; 40K BTU/hr and looks like a 50's jet engine. Kinda noisy but it works. The CO detector upstairs in the house has never gone off when I use it.

Well, I did get a little work done over the weekend. I started the rear apron swap on Krunchy. These first 2 shots are the reason why, as the "bondo meister" was busy before I got the car, as can be seen.

Needless to say, I cut the area out so I could see how much rust was hiding. I didn't see much, but then the "superior" undercoating didn't cover much.

I plan to sand and epoxy prime this area, after I finish straightening it out some, then it'll get a coat of Nutria brown like the rest of the car, then I'll cap it off with the rear apron piece below.

I've still got more work to do to it, but it's coming along. Still have more blocking to do, even if it'll be mostly hidden by the rear bumper. My short term goal is to have this all sealled up by the end of March, so I can get back to so other things on my list that I want to do.
By the way, these are the first shots with the new digi camera. I also had to get photoshop, so I could resize the pics, but it's better than scanning and posting I suppose. Rolling Eyes

for resizing pictures:

if you use windows XP, there is a powertoy to do that for you just through a right click. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx this is officially from microsoft, so it is safe to use

if you use vista or 7: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/09/imag...dows-7.ars this one is not directly from microsoft, but i trust the source and use it on my computer with 64-bit windows 7.

if you use a mac i have no idea.

back on topic, i love the picture showing the fan through the bellows. to someone who is very new to ACVW and the type 3, this helps to explain much about the body structure of the rear end and the purpose of those louvers on the side! thanks, and absolutely beautiful work!

Well, that part of the car never really got anything done with it back when all the other work was getting done. I picked up the part from Russ back in 2008, but never had any time to mess with it. This winter has been slow (and very cold with 12 inches of snow currently on the ground), so I've been working on it slowly over the winter. Cutting the old piece out was what I needed to focus my attention on getting back to it. Well that, and spring is just around the corner for us. Cool

I'd mainly been working on prepping the replacement piece, as it was pretty bent up (not faulting Russ), and I figured it would be easier working on it on the bench.

question for the gurus... why does my notch not have an apron like this? The bottom of the rear of the car by the exhaust looks factory - no evident bodywork, but no apron. my notch was delivered to Keil Germany in 12/67... she's a 68 MY.
can provide pics if you really wanna see.

I have never seen one that did not have the lower part of the apron. Unless it had been cut off by a PO.
Many times, to put a custom exhaust on, they were cut off.

Some updates. I did sand the inside portion of the air ducts, and got them epoxy primed off (sorry no pic, I just forgot). I first finished removing the last remains of the "superior" undercoating, wiped it down with laquer thinner, then wax and grease remover, then primed it. I had to do some pulling to get the middle of the lip to meet the "new" apron, as it was still pushed in from the original crash damage that happened many years ago (probably while the car was still in Canada Rolling Eyes

). Once I got it where I liked it, I then final fitted the apron. Up to that point, I was test fitting to check everything. Remember, this "new" apron was cut off a 69 Square, so it didn't fit exactly like one from a Notch would. Once I was satisfied, I tacked it on, then welded it in place. Here's a couple of shots on how it looks now.

A good portion of the prep work (mostly K-36 primer) ended up coming back off due to it getting a little warm behind it in some spots (where the lip joins the apron), but then part of the primer didn't grab as well as it should have (probably the cold temps we had last month working against me, and me not being out there everyday working on it, and heating the shop). No matter, I'd rather have it fail now (actually earlier this week) rather than 3 or 4 months from now. It's currently got it's last coat of K-36 on it drying right now, then it'll get sanded, and 1 more coat of DP to seal it. Then it'll be ready for paint. Yes, there was an outward dent in it in the above pics, but I took it out yesterday, so it's now gone. I don't know if it'll get painted sunday, or if it'll be monday, but I did bring the rear fenders back in, so it's getting close. Cool

Then I can reassemble that part of the car, and move on to prepping for a clear coat (the entire car). We'll just have to wait and see how far I get, as I've got a FI repair job to do on a Chevy saturday.

Nice. I was wondering about the primer THEN weld. Wondered why and how the primer would hold up to the heat. Is it done so the inside is coated as well as possible?

I have a good 220V gas MIG welder now. Only one 220V outlet so unless your welder is 110v you probably don't need to bring it along. Maybe just your own welding helmet and stuff.

Otherwise, an extra grinder or two would be good.

Nice work on the apron, BTW.

Well, my mig welder is a 110V unit, but it needs a full 25 amps to run, or it trips breakers (BTDT more than once). However, my TIG welder is 220V. Twisted Evil

But I'll bring my helmet, and a couple of grinders, and some discs. Do you have an air compressor? Just wondering about bringing a DA sander and a 90 degree die grinder, and or a touch up gun for shooting primer.
