Any of you guys that have caster shims know around how thick the shims are in in. and how many degrees of caster their worth? I know you can get thicker shims, but I would guess by now there is a "rule of thumb" when it comes to a narrowed beam, ride hieght, and how thick the shim needs to be. I have a 6.5in. narrowed adjustible beam with CB dropped spindles and right now as it sits it has 0 degrees caster.....not too good! Smile
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Rick.

Thanks drscope, it helps some. I really just want to make my own shims and would rather not stack them if I can help it. I will probably end up making some and then measuring the effect on caster.
Thanks again.
Rick.

$10 a set. Can you find materials and make them for less then that? or are you just trying to say "I did it myself?"

If I was going to stack them, I'd certainly tack weld them together.

Well I have the material already, I am cheap, but I also don't want to have to wait for shipping. I know that is a weak reason but I will probably have time tomorrow at work to make, install, and try the shims. It would be easier if the required thickness was known before hand. I have a MIG welder but no way to weld alum. and that's what the shims look like their made from. I built the beam myself and don't mind a little fab work but it sure isn't so I can go around and say I built everything myself. I may not have a big ole pile of money but my time is worth more than that to me. Very Happy Ive built enough junk, I don't have to make everything! Cool Work is slow and I will have some free time.

Are those things even worth using?

They are a "MUST" for folks running a lowered beam, lowered beams equal less and less caster depending on how low you go, and caster is a manditory item.

Caster is the inclination angle of the spindle. On a lowered car with the rear lowered too there might not be much need for them. Rake the car with the rear being a little higher and that changes. Personally , I feel the money spent on a set...less than 8 bucks, is worth the money, wait time, etc for a piece that fits perfectly. It is more than just a section of pipe cut to fit the beam. It fits the beam and frame head....perfectly.

If your car is lowered, you will definitely notice a diffrence in the way she drives if you install a set. DEFINITELY. The twitchiness will go away and the car will be much more stable at speeds higher than 30mph.

One set and you can reuse your factory bolts, two sets, and longer bolts must be used. ....and don't forget to use torque specs on the frame head bolts or they WILL strip.

1 1/2 degrees are normal shim change. Gene Berg has 3 degree also.

I used 2 sets on my 54 because one set wasn't good enough on my 63!
So thats 2 shims on each side of the beam.

Here's my 54 pan:
