I am now driving my thingster, but have a problem changing gears with the Scat shifter, any suggestions for a replacement?
I do not have the tips of my fingers on my right hand after the fire, caused by fixing a leaking gas line in my 70 bus. Always disconnect the battery when working with gas lines, then no spark!
BTW do you like my radio enclosure?

I've heard nothing but bad reports on most SCAT shifters. I think the older units were good (don't know the time line). The "reverse" lockout thingy was a pain to pull up to engage reverse.
Check to see if the shift rod bushing(s) are worn out. There's one in the tunnel (remove the shifter, and look back about a couple of inches) as well as one under the rear center seat. Remove the cover plate, and you'll see where the shift rod connects to the transaxle shift point. This coupler gets worn too.
If all this checks out, put a stock shifter back in.

If money is no object, buy a BERG shifter. Great units, but pricey. You'd never buy another shifter though. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

I want a shifter that does not have the reverse thingy, does a Berg shifter have one?
I looked in the Gene Berg Catalog and the 14" shhifter looks right?
Is that a button you have to push with your thumb to mengage reverse?

yes, berg also has a finger operated reverse lock. If you want a shifter without this feature, I´d choose a stock shifter witch metal quick shift kit and new bushing and coupler.
My Berg, nice, crisp, smooth, acurate:

Basically a plate that moves the shifter base up and the "ball" down, thus increasing the fulcrum length and shortening the throw.

Here is a link to CB performance for a picture.

I guess if I use the quick shift kit, I need a standard gear shift. Is the Thing shifter different from the 73 bug? _________________ 63 singlecab
