I just bought these for my engine since they were missing:

You would think you could just put them in place and tighten the bolts... NOT! There's not enough clearance behind the heat riser for them to fit into place. Which engine tin needs to be removed for them to fit? I'm guessing this isn't easy, which is the reason they are missing from so many engines?

They should fit, you just have to work them from the outside in.

Keep in mine that the stock heat riser tubes on the manifold are larger than a beetle. The hole may need to be cut larger.

I bought them on eBay from this guy:

http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ50QQsassZbugcity

I won them both for $10.50 and $6.00 shipping! Unfortunately, they didn't come with the insulation that fits into the opposing tin...

I'll try to fit them in this weekend. I suppose these parts are a little smarter than me right now...

I just checked the micro fiche and both a 74 Type 181 and a 74 Beetle use the same part. They have the same part number 211 119 577/578

From that part #, it might have been a Bus part first! Wink

yes all true. there are different diameters of heat riser pipes, the thing ones being the larger size. it is quite possible to have a set of these that look right in a photo but do not fit a thing engine.

A bunch of the various engine tin parts on a Thing came from a (68 -71) Bus like the tin that goes under the pus rod tubes
