I need to purchase or fabricate a westy hatch prop rod for my 62 SO-34 before Jerome. Its the early type. Some pics would really help me if I have to fab it. I also have some cool stuff to trade such as 58 to 61 NOS tail lense, wood bows, curtain rods etc. or cash..........thanks for any help

The `62 prop rod is different then the earlier ones.
The hatch style is actually completely different as well.
The prop attaches with a different style mount at the pivot, it is a bent steel U shape bar. The prop is now snapped into place with a 2 piece snap, one side is screwed into the hatch and the other side is screwed into the rod itself.
Here is the pic of the original unit in my April 14 `62 so-34.
You could easily make this with some aluminum stock and a bit of fabbing.

There is about a dozen different props over the years...so older style is kinda vague, like saying I have an older bus!
Our buses are only 2 months apart, musta been a change right in there.
Looks like you need the style above like in that `60.
Good luck! _________________ Samba Member #95 |

There definitely are several different ones but yours is the first I have seen like it. I have seen the later type with the slots in the hatch surround[always on the big rear door models] and what I call the early type. Your hatch is way different also. I dont have the metal lip.....much nicer than the old style........So23.com is going to repo 3 styles when he gets to it....and he will......I got a sisal mat from him that was outstanding. Thanks |

Yeah, that metal lip/channel is really cool.
The wood panel slides into the 3 permanent sides
and then the 4th side is slid into place and secured with
the screws from the hatch latch assemblies.
What is nice is you can open the hatch while
driving and that channel protects the edges
of the panel. You do not have to worry
about your wood getting destroyed by
heavy gusts of wind....guess I how know that! LOL...
I just sold 2 sets of original westy rack alluminum
tube for $20 a set, I think that is the same sized
stuff as the hatch prop..? That would have worked
well for you...it had a nice originall patina to it.
You should post some pics of your flip, I am sure
folks would love to see it! _________________ Samba Member #95 |

My June 62 so33 has the "later type" prop rod with slots in the surrounding metal trim, and it is still a small rear hatch bus. The really strange part is it still has the early style chrome latch knobs. Original and deffinitely built right at the changeover. |

late (63-65?) style: The rod is like the 66-63 rear hatch prop rod. The front piece of aluminium trim matches it. This is probably a sturdier style, but I have not owned a bus with it.

i bought 4' of 1/2" od aluminum tubing cost =$4.32... he gave me a little extra as prop rods are just under 17" in length.now to cut to length and drill holes at 1",5",10",15" as per the picture i found then i need to put a large cotter pin in end and flatten end to hold it. then make the loop to go in cotterpin to hold end to hatch. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017
