I have a 74 thing with the big air scoops over the rear fenders and want to remove them. They are riveted on. what the best way to remove them. should I just drill threw/out the rivets?

thanks

Drilling out the rivet would do the trick...you know the "scoops" are stock on a '74? Are you removing them to paint and then re-install? Or are you removing them to discard? If it's the latter you'll have a big hole to contend with... Question

My '73 has '74-style air intakes, but retains the '73 louvers. Is it likely that I have a late-model '73 and that the scoops are originals from the factory, or that they were merely added on later?

I plan to remove them for good. I don't like the look and prefer the the more stream line look of the 73 louvers. Can anyone explain to me the reason the air scoops went from the louver style in 73 to the big scoops in 74?

So, I simply need to drill out the rivets holding the scoops on?
I will come up with something to deal with the resulting hole after removing the scoops. maybe weld in some 73 louvers or something.

The scoops are used to direct the air intake from above rather than below. Since 74's came with the standard heat exchangers, the engineers wanted to ensure that fresh air was sucked into the fan and blown into the cabin and not any exhaust fumes!

Mines the opposite. '73 with the "scoops" added. Dude said it was to help keep the dust out of the motor area from all the dirt road driving. I don't want the holes so now I'm stuck with them. Confused

You can always weld the holes shut.

I couldnt stand the 74 scoops either so i took them off and made the hole bigger for better ventalation. Now i will never have heating problems.....

But a drill bit does the trick when removing the scoops and then just hit it with a MIG and plug them up and file them down for nice results.

Are they in good condition and do you have any interest in selling them?
I like the chunky look on raised ones and the smooth 73 look on lowered.
PM me if you do Mahalo , John

or do something like this. I plugged the holes with plastic plugs...so it could be reversed.

surfarii, once removed I plan on selling the air scoops. The drivers side scoop is in excellent condition, The passenger side is in the same overall condition except that the previous owner had a rear tire gate on the car and made a ~5mm wide by 2cm long cut in the back corner of the scoop. I haven't removed them yet, as i am still buillding the courage as to how to do it without causing more damage.

I like all the ideas/pics so far guys, thanks.

leave em alone, You are opening a can of worms. Eventually you will learn to love them. The more you take the car away from original condition the less valuable it becomes. Look for more constructive ways to improve the car lke detailing the motor, making sure all the hinge pins are in good working order, por 15 the bottom of the pans, etc, etc, etc

honky, I appreciate your feeling about keeping the car orginal and I respect that. I bought a car on purpose that had its originality already ruined so that I could justify stripping the paint, changing that engine, fenders, etc. to obtain what I invisioned my thing to be. The scoops are as good as gone, I just don't like them.

Sorry, Just thought you were getting yourself into a quagmire. You see so many old VW's torn apart with best intentions only to see them end up as a pile of junk. Good luck with it. Post some pics of your progress as it happens.

That is only a personal opinion but not fact. I respect you being a purist but keep your opinion as opinions.

Removing the scoops will litteraly take 10 minutes to do.You will take longer setting everything up, then it would drilling out the rivets. Dont hesitate and just do it. In my opinion, the hole looks better then the ugly muffs, meanwhile you figure out what you will replace it with.

Good luck
