X2. I have come close to pulling the trigger on a few I have seen on this site but held off to find one in a better condition/ more reasonable/realistic price. All of those were from cars > 1960 but < 1967, though. So what dear Lind is the difference? |

I got an item that should not raise too much ire if reproduced- the cardboard wire covers for early Beetles. |
do you have the '56-'60 style? those are so super rare. it is the most commonly missing part on restored beetles of that era. like over 95% either don't have it or have the wrong style. most people don't even know what they look like. |
Do tell professor, do tell.... |
the early ones are medium grey in color.
the later ones which are darker grey/black.
the early ones have very sharply formed corners
the later ones have a simpler pressing.
the early ones have a dry paper material.
the much later ones have a waxy paper material (like late '60s ish)
I will get some pics of mine later and show a side by side comparison. I think that it would be relatively easy to reproduce. at least by the standards of what it takes to reproduce parts. _________________ .

here are some comparison pics on the dash backs. I pulled one early one out of a '56 many years back. I pulled this one out of an early '60 beetle. I don't know how much later the early style was used.
can anyone think of a restored or original late oval which has the correct style of dash back?
if someone is serious about reproducing this, and has the skillz, contact me. I might be willing to loan mine out to someone who can get it done.
these dash backs don't fit in easily, and they are very fragile, which is probably why so few still exist today. also, they don't fit flush with the cowl.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but to briefly continue the dash cover discussion: My original dash back cover in my '62 had started to warp and so not fit flush with the cowl as you say. But I found a '66 original cover and that one did fit flush, so I think they do fit flush with the cowl, as long as they don't start to warp. Even if they do warp, I wonder if they can be restored perhaps with a steamer. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

From a pretty low mileage '58 I looked at a couple days ago...
Correct, or not? |

Looks like a plastic reproduction. Shouldn't it have those rubber pads stapled across the top? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society
