Got new keys for my Thing... OEM looking. Picked 'em up on eBay from Mark1 VWs

$26 for two. Not cheap, but if you want original, you pay. The metal was very tough, but I got two solid keys now that look great. |

I bought a key from them for my 84 Rabbit GTI. Yeah those original keys are thick and solid.
My local locksmith wouldn't cut it, said was too heavy duty for his machine. I had to go to another. I plan on buying a key for my Thing too! |

At the Bug Out this weekend, this guy seemed to know an awful lot about VW keys. I got an OEM gas cap key made for $20.

I got a new key from Mark on ebay, didnt work for me though :( its cut to factory code but my ignition was really worn away. New key opens doors though. Check they keys your using now before purchasing. If they are worn think twice. My options now are to re-key the whole car with new pins etc. OR copy the worn key. |

I'm in a similar boat: PO put in new ignition. So I have a key for
ignition
doors
engine
gas cap
glove compartment
trunk
I lose one MPG due to the weight of the keys.

I went to the local VW here in NJ and had them make copies of my key. They just happened to have old blanks laying around and were willing to refund me my money if they didn't work... I think they were just amazed at someone coming in still asking about parts for a 73 Thing _________________ // '73 Thing "Jeep Zerstörer" currently being restored / kustomized

I don't personally know Mike, but many I know know him.
Chances are I won't wear out these keys. They're stout.
Now to do the Westfalia keys... right after I fix the headlights and front turn signals. It's always something. |
