I'm finally starting to work on my engine however, it's absolutely filthy and I want to clean it. Right now it has dirt and oil and oil and dirt and caked on dirt and oil. I've scraped a lot of it off and vacuumed all the loose stuff out. Tonight I'm going to bring it to the pressure washer place. What can I get wet and what shouldn't I get wet. I know to cover the carb and the distributor but what else cannot get wet?
Also, should I remove the engine trim piece on the deck so water can find its way out the bottom of the engine compartment? |

Cover the distributor and carb with a thick rag, then rubber-band a plastic bagggie (thick) over it. If your fresh air hoses are the stock cardboard, protect those, too. Wipe doen the coil after you are done. That's about it. Go at it from underneath, too. |

stand far enough back that you don't soak hot heads with cold water- that's not a good combo.
Purple Power, available at most parts places, is a great degreaser. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Generally I buy a can of "Gunk" from the auto parts store spray down the engine, then drive it to the car wash to get it good and hot. Then I cover the Dizzy, best I can with a rag or plastic bag and spray the heck of of the engine. Don't forget the underside as well.

I used Simple Green Maxx on my engine this week. Sprayed it on and let it soak for about 5 minutes then sprayed on some more. Then just hit it with the hose with the garden sprayer set on JET. This was a pretty nasty looking engine and engine compartment. Everything came right off. Looks like a freshly rebuilt motor now. That stuff really gets rid of oil and grease. _________________ member of: Fort Worth Aircoolers Gang |
