Should the Rear wheel shaft (stubshaft) be hard to remove or reinstall? The splines came off the brake drum OK. However I had to use a mallet to tap it out the rest of the way. The rollers of the outter bearing fell out of the cage so I replaced the outter wheel bearing . The inner bearing looked fine. I had to tap the stubshaft in pretty hard to get it to go back together. Is this normal? |

This is my next challenge too, I'll probably start to tackle it this weekend.
On taking mine apart, one stub slipped out easily, but the bearings seem like they need to be driven out. On the other side, my outer bearings fell out too (cage was completely destroyed), and the stub wont budge! I've tried using a mallet, and it's not moving. I'll try pressing it out next.
Reading your post, I now wonder if the bad outer bearings have something to do with it being hard to remove. Hopefully it doesn't indicate some bigger problem - like a bad stub axle. I suspect that'll be expensive! |

When I removed the 4 bolts that hold the outter bearing seal (That also go through the backing plate), there were the rollers loose from their cage. When I put it back together it was hard to get the stub shaft back in, with the new outter bearing. |

---It's sorta normal, I've done a couple dozen over the years (Things and bugs and Buses), they seem to fall into two groups. The "fall out the back" group and the "Get the hammer" group. The hammer group all have hardened grease stuck in the spacers.

---However, I've never had the bearings come out in pieces, that seems odd! _________________ --- The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.

I just repacked rear bearings and CV's on my one of my three 73 things last weekend and both stubs needed deadblow hammer hits and both had bearings come away from the inner races. Cleaned, repacked and resealed, ready to go! This car hasnt been driven in 15+ years and has been hiding in the deserts of southwest Utah... _________________ 1967 beetle
