Okay, I know what an "align bore" is but what is a "thrust cut?" It seems that everyone I talk to says that if I'm going to rebuild my engine my case needs both. The Bug Me videos only show them doing an align bore.
Also, which rebuild kit is best. I have looked at mid-american motor works and Mofoco.
Any help or suggestions? |

I think the best way to get a good rebuild kit is to pick the parts yourself. A lot of the stuff out there now is not as nice as it should be. I'd stick with a counterweighted crankshaft from Demello, Mahle pistons and jugs, german lifters, rebuilt heads form a place that is honest about what is done to them, or new if you are going dual port. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Thrust cut is cutting the case on the outside of where the thrust bearing(behind the flywheel) is located. Not all cases need this done. It is less common than an align bore. If you have any specific questions about our rebuild kits, please pm me. |

Thanks Roy. Can you tell me why your kit is better than anyone else's? |

Here is the general idea but not VW.
http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/eb50331.htm
If you use Rimco they will tell you if you need it done I'm sure Mofoco can also.
If they do a thrust cut most will sell you a special bearing to match the size of the new cut.
"inspect is the the main thrust bearing dowel pin hole. I think this area is often overlooked. If the dowel pin has any movement in the hole I trash the case. The movement means the end play was not set correctly and the excessive end play caused the dowel pin to oval out the hole." (http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/case.htm)
I agree with crofty, I would pick the parts individually after research. |
