Only a few too many years ago. I even started a thread on slammed or lowered Vanagons in "reader's rides" and posted it as a joke. It was going way more than our standard of 45mph testing speed.

That works as good as a truck mounted crash cushion.

I can't remember the circumstances, but when German Supply Scott's wife got into a head-on accident in their Thing, it (and the wife) fared pretty well. The Thing has some nice crumple zones compared to other ACVWs. Not much by today's standards, but...

They overloaded the cargobay with a huge block of concrete. This footage is not an official safety testcrash. Wink

Crash tests of vehicles are important, but I don't give 'em much weight. I don't drive them to wreck them.

I've been riding motorcycles for nearly three decades now. You have to concentrate more on riding and accident avoidance to stay safe on two wheels.

I drive my vintage Thing and '85 Wefty the same way. Aggressively, cautiously, fast, and I'm constantly checking my mirrors to see who is around me. Happily, it's almost impossible to over run your brakes on either.

... with an overloaded cargo area.

I have seen this video in other places... the consensus is always that the vehicle was heavily loaded... and that it pretty much wasn't expected to make it. There's videos of other trucks in similar situations, and they all fare the same.
