eBay. I have original Thing keys; bought them about 2 months ago and a guy I work with cut them for me. He said they were very hard.
I paid $25 for two. It's probably silly, but I like having and original key.

Well worth the price. Just find a good key cutter to cut your keys. |

Do they make ignition / door lock sets? It seems a bother to have to carry two keys around. I rarely lock the doors on my Thing but sometimes it does happen. |

I think that Mark1 VW's can rekey the door locks to match the ignition lock.

Don't forget the deck lid lock. Locking the doors may be somewhat of a joke, but I may start locking my deck lid - don't want someone to help themselves to my carbs, electronic ignition module, fancy coil, etc etc.
I'm fortunate enough to have a single key that locks the doors, locks the deck lid and starts the car. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

Was the decklid originally keyed the same as the ignition? My ignition key doesn't work in the decklid. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

I don't know if you lost your keys but I did and someone said VW hung a set in the engine bay when they were new. I can't rember exactly were but it saved my skin once. Dose anyone else know anything about this? They were still there after 30+ years |

All of the locks on the Thing were keyed the same. I can rekey any lock on your Thing to match your key. I have one of Mark's repro original rubber headed keys and they are very hard. Be sure to have a GOOD locksmith cut them for you. I can provide all latches, keys, rekeying and more with any VW Thing latch. |
