yeah no kidding. Thats a great idea. I can get a muffler and pipe combo to have the exhaust come out one or both sides behind the tire. Im thinking thats probably the area where its least to have any damage done to it. Im prone to taking stuff off road a little too much.
I didn't realize the bus had the same problem. Thanks for the input. _________________ ...70 type 181

Scott's right! I had a Triumph Spitfire once that spewed exhaust back onto the driver and passenger. The PO had installed a Monza muffler that exited straight out the rear of the car. I replaced it with a muffler that exited out to the side and down and the fumes went away!
I do indeed recall my eyes burning and a headache when I ran the heater. I attached a twist latch to the top of the front windows which held the windows in close to the body, and that stopped the fumes from entering the cab.
I drive with the back seats down flat in "cargo mode" most of the time. I have carpet velcroed to the back of the seats, and I noticed that the wind currents blow the edge of the carpet forward on the passenger side, but not on the drivers side. Apparently, me sitting in the front seat disrupts the air flow... |

I'll be looking into that. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good muffler that still offers decent ground clearance that can be routed to the side of the car. Im thinking piped out behind one of the tires. I don't think dual exhaust would make that much of a difference in power. May it will but on a stock 1600 i am not sure. _________________ ...70 type 181

How about this: I saw a little S-10 pickup the other day with an exhaust stack like a semi or an old tractor. Even had the hinged cap on it. Try this:

Okay i found something that might help but im not sure who else has a stock muffler. The PO put a new stock muffler on my thing last year and i don't want to replace it just yet since it probably only had 20 miles on it before i bought it.
Cip1 sells a zoom tube, part number ACC-D-2530 - CHROME ZOOM TUBE FOR BEETLE MUFFLER
And im pretty sure it would work. We'll see if i figured out how to set up a picture for it. Basically its one pipe that connects to both outlets on a stock muffler and looks like you can position it to the right or the left. Im ordering one this weekend to see if it works out. I hate chrome so im going to sandblast it and spray it black with some kind of exhaust paint.

another option might be to weld flanges on to the front of the heater boxes and just bolt the bottom 2 pipes on instead of messing around with the leaky donut gaskets.
i think the kits are less than 15 dollars, just need to cut and weld a bit. |

Im trying to think of what it looks like. You got a pick.
Actually i need to take some welding classes next semester even though its not in my intinerary. Im going to end up with sliding rifle mounts everywhere by the time the class is over. _________________ ...70 type 181

I'm with your friend on that one. Like some cars I've had, the pickup it was on was probably totaled every time it was low on gas.
Anyway, I've got the S&S system that exits out the 2 bumper holes and I've never had a problem. The only smells I ever had were from the leaky fuel filler hoses up front. Once I replaced those (and learned not to overfill the tank), the only rank smells I've ever gotten are from the factories and farms here in Iowa. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

here is a great guide to welding flanges on, I'm going to be doing with in december, only downside is you will need to do this too any future exhaust system you buy. |

Dude no kidding about the front fumes. I need to replace those hoses. I keep smelling fuel really bad on left turns. Of course it doesn't help that i try to make turns on 2 wheels.
I'll have to pick up a stock exhaust when im ready to change it out. this ones new so i couldn't bring myself to throw it out just yet. THanks for the info. _________________ ...70 type 181

I'm not expert on this, but I've been mucking around with air cooled stuff in my teens. I'm twice that now.
Fumes in the cab? Are the heater boxes rusted or otherwise mucked up? Are all your pipes tight?
If your Thing is a '74, how are the heater pipes running through the cab?
Fumes mean something is up. Track it down; beyond being a nasty inconvenience, it means something is amiss.
They weren't designed to be smoky |

I thought we had an exhaust leak in our VW Golf - whenever we open the vents, it smells like exhaust.
We chased it down to an oil "issue" (wife forget to put the oil cap back on - oil everywhere). It turns out that the exhaust isn't leaking at all, but the dirty oil is dripping onto the manifold and burning off which smells a heck of a lot like exhaust fumes - but isn't. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

Im pretty sure its the stock beetle exhaust pipe that creates a draught right in the middle of the wagen. Im waiting for that new pipe to come in that bolts to the stock beetle exhaust and exits the exhaust to the far side of the car. For those who have thing style stock exhausts that come out through the bumper i think those are the correct ones to have and I don't think they cause fumes to circulate back into the car because of the their position. I'm going to have to save up for a thing style stock.
I've asked a few others in town about their thing style stock exhausts and they said they never had problems.
The pipes are connected and tight and my 181 is a 1970 someone shipped from Germany several years ago and not sure if there are other issues i have to be concerned about.
Thanks for the reply's we'll see how the new adapter works when it comes in. _________________ ...70 type 181

okay Ian help me out. How did you get it to post?? I did what it said but the pic wouldn't show.
Oh yeah and if i figure it out you get to see my primative drawing of a 181.
I was using the program to figure out the best position on a beetle roof for an oil cooler scoop. I don't want to spend big bucks for the centurion style scoop thats available since it sits too high. I also don't want anything important sticking too far outside the baja body incase of a rollover or trees. I can definitely see a tree knocking it off very easily over here.
After you figure out all the controls on the program its awesome. _________________ ...70 type 181
