Makes sense, Ian. Thanks. I hadn't thought about it enough to realize that it's the shock tower that's the problem. I was thinking more that it was trying to keep the two horizontal tubes together. I was just looking at the pics of your new one:
Makes me wonder if someone couldn't design new shock towers for our beams for less than the price of a whole new beam ($485 @ Thing Shop) _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Don't forget the new bushings, the fact that it fit right up, the really nice adjusters and the reinforced towers. I didn't want to mess around (with the new engine, I've got no problem going 95+ on the freeway) so I sent them the money.
If you really can't cope with the cost of a Thing beam, consider a bug beam. Everything should bolt right up, but you'll lose the side supports. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

Blind Chicken made some shock mounts for a custom beam, I am sure others have also. Except they made it for a link pin beam, but I don't see why the shocks could't be changed to make it fit. And would look cooler too! |

Reviving old thread and I just want to clarify a couple things. I was just called by a potential customer about beam replacement on a thing. It sounds like the center section is rotted out, so planning on using a type 1 beam. Here are my questions and what I think I know:
#1 the only difference between type 1 and thing beams are the tabs on the sides and beefier shock towers. Correct?
#2 The increase in ride height is ONLY from the raised spindles. The center spring anchor is the same orientation as a type 1. Correct?
#3 Thing control arms will interchange. No bearing differences. Ball joints are unique. Correct?
I just want to have my stuff together so I order the correct parts before it gets here. Thanks in advance. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

For whatever it's worth, the front torsion leaves have a 181 part number.
The top and bottom set of 10 leaves (each) is 181 411 027.
Good luck, Mondshine |
