Hey all..

Well, I took another thing on another X-Country excursion, or a "bold journey" as my late father would likely have called it...

Boston to San Francisco, via Chicago, Milwaukee, Rapid City, Billings, Idaho City, Bend, OR, Gold Beach and then all the way down the PCH to San Francisco.

We blogged about it here from my phone, from the road: www.gregandpetra.blogspot.com

The THING ran GREAT - averaged 27mpg overall.

So, now I'm in San Francisco, and would love to connect with some Bay Area Thingers... and more specifically, I need a garage and some tools, and maybe a hand swapping out my transaxle - the Ghia tranny I installed in my first thing six years ago has finally started to bite the dust - whines like an SOB while moving forward. Is there anybody that could help me out with some jacks, a garage, and some arms to help with the swapage. It'll come apart quick - I just put the new motor in prior to the trip - and this is a truly rust and grease-free original Thing!

Also, any recommendations on area (as in downtown SFO) shops that are reputable for routine service, until we find a place with a garage?

Thanks in advance!

Cool,

I'm in SF but I don't have any garage space and I have basic tools.

I love the south bay area but its kinda far for me to travel.

The SF VW club meets in the south bay as well.

Maybe until you get that garage you should send all your parts and tools back east for "temporary" storage... Yea, that's it.

Once upon a time, (for a short time) I lived in SF, and my girlfriend at the time (now wife) bought me a membership at the San Francisco Auto Repair Center. http://www.sanfranciscoautorepaircenter.qpg.com

With a membership, for a small fee ($1 per hour, $1.50 if you needed their tools), I could work on my car at their garage all afternoon. If I needed a mechanic's help for more than a quick minute or two, you'd have to start paying the hourly rate ($150 IIRC). Also a fat charge if you had to leave the car overnight.

Their website doesn't mention a membership at all, but you should call them and see if they still do it. I had used it several times, it was a very nice deal.

I know it is a bit of a drive from SF to the Silicon Valley to do any normal B.L.T.N. loitering events but maybe you might consider keeping in touch or joining our forum.

What a great idea! Oh, wait, you already have all my spare parts! I was looking for my threadlock the other day, but to no avail. It's the little stuff, I tell ya...

Oh, I have my garage now... so why don't you load up the singlecab and start heading this way.. See you in about 8 months? Wink

(thanks for all your help, kev!)

I think you are being a bit optimistic. It probably would take eight months to get over the Rockies.
