Here is a mount that I made for an early bus. It uses stock trans mount in front. It doesn't hang any lower than the frame horn support. All bolt in, works great if you don't have a welder. I used a cnc plasma to make it. I have the file if anyone wants to make some. I bet this can also be used on early Porsche's. I got the idea looking at split bugs with full syncro trans.

When you say early bus, do you mean a split case trans bus? If so did you know about this set up?

Any photos of the adapter before it is installed? I am having a hard time picturing what it looks like up high from those photos.

I saw the wagenswest one. I don't like urethane and the price. The sheet of steel cost $6.00. Also when it cracks you have to buy a new one. On mine you just buy a stock rubber mount. You can change it without removing or sliding the trans back also. Picture of it not installed was on another pc. There is only two pieces used. I made the one piece twice in different thickness steel to try and get back spacing close.

Full marks for thinking outside the box!

As the primary roll of the front mount is to keep the shift rod aligned by not allowing the front of the trans to pitch up and down, that should function well.
You gotta admit it's fugly - but for a few bucks, some ingenuity and some time invested, it's a perfectly practical solution!

You should probably post up that file. What design program did you use? I have a friend with a CNC plasma cutter in his fab shop. He could make a few, possibly.

Hard to tell exactly from the photos, but how far does it hang below the torsion tube. Looks like it hangs pretty low.

Great idea. In the "H" drop bracket I see a few places where a crack to form and follow. If the "H" is thick enough and strong grade steel it should be ok but keep a lookout for a fracture.

What the heck is that hugeass cutout area on the U-cradle?

The cutouts are where the nosecone mounts are. I cut it out so the bolts that hold the rectangular piece dont hit the metal. It has plenty of room to not have them but I designed it in. You can use longer bolts if you want and if the tranny mount ever broke the bolts would hold the nose cone from moving too much to limp home. I am not worried about a fracture, why I used rounded corners. I used 3/16 steel. The rubber mount itself is like 18 gauge, weakest link. It doesn't hang that low. I was worried it would but the bar across the frame horns hangs lower. The first picture is a level shot. I have a dxf and vlm file.

60vw do you have a swivel seat? That's what I made this bracket for, 59 DD swivel. You can tell by the belly pans in the picture.

I'm talking the cutout at the cradle, That big gray U thing, not up by the torsion tube.

Oh that, I don't know. I can't figure out why the PO did it, I didn't do it. Nasty cut too, looks like a torch cut.

I may have missed the explanation. Are you still using the original rubber doughnut?

No, it uses a late style mount instead of donut. Used for a later synchro trans in early chassis.

Did you end up using the bus or beetle nosecone? If someone were to make a bunch of these, it would be an added bonus if it used the more common bug nosecone. I can't be the only guy who has 10 bug ones laying around and ALWAYS need the early bus one! Very Happy

Is this the mount you're talking about?

I agree with you on the use of the red plastic.

Please keep us posted on how the mount holds up.

The original mount relied on the doughnut for support, and the studs only for
front to back forces.

I'm assuming the two studs from the doughnut housing can hold up to the
up and down forces.

No studs there, takes bolts. Same size as beetle so it will hold.
