Geez, I do a leakdown test every morning when I first get up. Slowly.
But I spent some time today replacing a leaking crankcase breather hose assembly, it had split and sawed through so I had the speckled egg look all over the back of my Westy after a trip to Seattle:
I'd repaired it earlier with some heavy-wall heatshrink but it sawed through:
Made a new assembly from copper refrigeration tubing and fittings:
Painted it white to match the engine:
And after the dog watched the paint dry I installed it using short pieces of rubber hose as jumpers:
The copper tubing is smaller than the rubber hose assembly so won't chew / get chewed between the filter housing and valve cover.
First thing tomorrow the van gets a bath (after my daily leakdown test). |

Yup, it's a stock 1.6 liter NA Diesel. Not setting any speed records nor getting any speeding tickets, it makes for a meditative driving experience and encourages the use of "the road less traveled". Because you're gonna have somebody climbing into your tailpipe on the freeway! Oh, and I get about 26MPG for the Westy, which I enjoy very much. And no emissions controls/modules to burn out.
I painted the engine mostly white when I had it rebuilt, I like to see where the oil leaks are when they are small so I can fix them sooner.
Today, the dog and I went over to another Diesel owner's place and pulled the injection pump out for rebuild. Oregon is one of the states that won't let you "pump your own", owner's wife stopped to get the tank filled and the highly trained pump jockey filled it with gasoline. She made it about 3 miles. Bad, bad, bad. I did the "pull" job while the dog kept their 3-year old busy. Local shop gets about $650 to gut, stuff and calibrate that pump.
There is an exception to the "no self-serve" rule in Oregon, you can pump your own Diesel. Which is what I do, or stand there watching while the jockey pumps in the diesel.

Took apart the right rear axle today to troubleshoot a ticking sound. Found no circlip snap ring on the inner end of the half-axle so the axle would slip outwards. This let the outer CV joint catch on the inside of the stub axle and drag, wearing a half-circle inside of the cup and presumably skipping past part of it (thus the ticking sound, I think?).
The shiny silver semi-circle is the worn area.
Took this as a sign to just go ahead and overhaul the axles, replace CVs and bearings and shocks. Get dirty once, get it over with for a lot of miles. You all know what that job looks like so no need for pictures of that, eh? |

Painted my rear bumper and lower facia with DeeZee spray bed liner. It's just a one step spray can. Temporary until I get a chance to use raptor liner all around the bottom.

Yep - http://www.mcmaster.com/#sound-and-vibration-damping-sheets/=sv339l
The aluminized adhesive sheets. We'll see how well it lasts.
They have other products that might be more appropriate, but I had a number of sheets of this left over from another project. |

Since taking delivery of my 81 Westy in May, the following has been completed;
-New Oil Pressure Sender (I have the full gauge kit, but couldn't get it installed with the shrouds in the way, so this is temporary)
-New Upper/Lower Ball Joints, New Tie-rod assemblies.
-New Kumo 14 inchers
-New Windshield Washer pump
-New interior carpeting
-New Curtains
-Installed two low power fluorescent lamps
-New Blower Motor/Blower Motor Switch
-New water pump for the sink (Turbo charged! Poowwwerrr!)
-Updated the headlights with a new Relay kit and proper modern headlamps (Someday I -will- run Xenons)
-wired new rear speakers into the radio the P/O installed.
-Installed the brackets anchoring the pop-up tent to the body of the van
-Repaired the e-Brake wiring
-repaired defective LED panel for stove system (in progress, bad micro-controller, bad!)
Planned scheming afoot;
-Repack/replacement of Inner and outer CV joint boots (parts on hand, need to install)
-sort out heating issues (switch set to heat, air isn't heated)
-Replace bad seal around fuel filler neck causing a pungent fuel smell
-Replace fan on Fridge heating system (Parts on hand)
-Re-screen the screen panels for the sliding windows (Parts on hand)
-Finish installation of digital Tachometer (wiring run)
-Finish VDO oil pressure system (wiring run)
And the stuff I think needs done probably when it's cold out;
-rebuild transmission (s'a little vague don't you think?)
-rebuilt engine/replace engine (thinking a 914 2.0 might be the ticket though I have dreams of watercooling.) |

Its from a 1989/1990 mitsubishi montero. requires some cutting and welding.
These bumpers are about 4" too narrow for the van.
I cut the center out and mounted the ends to a piece of stock section steel
The center section is a piece of 5" channel steel,w/box steel mounts that go into the stock vw openings....this is real sturdy to take the tow hitch.
The channel steel is then drilled to accept the mitsu bumper hardware,so its all bolt on...easy repair and replacable parts
The end caps need trimming to fit the van body lines.
the tow hitch is a 6 bolt flat mount...lots of options
Dodge raider and isuzu trooper bumpers can be used also, this way...but I don't like the looks of the end caps...this year looks right VW on steroids

Last night I got a wild hair after work and decided to finally scratch another item off of my to-do list.
When I go camp we normally sleep downstairs with my head towards the rear hatch of the van. I always store my phone at night on the AC cabinet ledge which sits right above me while I'm laying down just in case I need it at night it's easy to reach and find. Well I've been thinking a dual USB charging socket would be nice up there so we could change both phones while we sleep.
I have a few extra Blue Sea dual USB sockets floating around so I decided to go ahead and take care of this install today. Drilled the hole, ran the wires to my Blue Sea fuse block located in the dead space under the flat cabinet and popped in a fuse. 20 minutes later I was done! Now I'll just leave me a cable up there for night time charging and I'm set!
