PostPosted: Sun Oct 05, 2014 5:53 pm    Post subject: Multivan / Fox / BMS Reply with quote

So we spent Saturday Installing a set of Fox shocks which we won half a set at Mogfest. I bought the other half from G/W as well as a set of BMS UCA's
I added dimples in the Blue knurled knob and an index point on the shock so I can tell what my setting are at a glance .
Installation of the fronts is time consuming if you have the correct spring compressor and I would imagine near impossible without it .
I've only put a few miles on them ,but so far I like them . I did snap one of the Sway bar links and will redo both sides with new hardware and Rubber.

This weekend I replaced the old rear hatch struts with ones from GoWesty. The old ones weren't the right kind, the ball join was being used as a screw to hold one in place and one was leaking. The new ones are great! An easy job with nice results.

I also installed a GoWesty LED interior light kit. They are brighter, but I wouldn't say by a ton. I like that they use less energy. If you get this kit be aware that you will probably have to cut the mounting brackets. The directions indicated that this might be the case for the more powerful version. I got the less powerful ones but they were still too long. A cutting disk on the dremel worked well. They only tricky part was the wire to the unit is very short and I cut it to make it easier to work with. Re-wiring it was a pain as there wasn't much to work with.

Today I took apart a spare steering column. I wanted to change the ignition switch in my Westfalia. It always starts but you need to wiggle the key to get the switch to work.

I also re-keyed the spare ignition cylinder I had. Now I don't have to use a key for the door and another key for the ignition. Hmmmm, I wonder if I can re-key the glovebox and gas cap too?

Ordered an adjustable voltage regulator too. Hopefully that will be here by the weekend.

spend an hour today looking for the electrical gremlin just to figure out that it was my mistake from the beginning. what gremlin would wire the brake lights with the house battery in the first place? Smile

although who thought that VW engineers would use one connector for both the wires to brake lights and to the radio?

Well, the ignition switch and lock cylinder are now replaced/repaired.

The lock cylinder was a little worn out. Somehow the aluminum was cracked near the bottom where it fits into the electrical portion of the assembly? The electrical part of the switch also had a small crack in it.

No luck on the glovebox lock, it uses a different style key.

Had an offer from a local Mechanic I trade with to get my Syncro Multivan Clone up on a lift and change out the starter with Diesel starter and adapter plate and updated harness. A solid 3 hours with 2 guys but well worth it .

More Air to the Engine

before installing the air scoops..

I had a look inside the snorkel air duct and look at what I found..

since the air duct is in OK shape I keep it instead of replacing it. I took a broom handle and clean the inside and reinstall...

I remove the plastic block off plate on the bottom of the D pillar where the hose went into the air filter box.... I always wonder why they put that plate.... no plate--> more air to the engine - similar to the driver's side, it's free flow - I reroute the hose so it won't move around...

I will install an external oil cooler later, but it's another story..

Passed my LAST Washington State DEQ test on my 1990 Westy Syncro

Vehicles over 25 years old are exempt from emissions testing in WA.

Prior to the test - I changed:

1. Spark Plugs
2. Spark Plug wires
3. Rotor and Cap
4. Air Filter

Original 2.1L still runs strong after 159,000 miles.

PostPosted: Wed Oct 15, 2014 4:13 pm    Post subject: Early oil filler tube..finally fits Reply with quote

My 1980 Westy and it's mighty 2L are running fine, fresh tuneup, new KONIs, D load Continentals and all. After a trip up to north Ga for apples I noticed the oil light flickering, quick pull over finds the oil level is good, but the filler tube is loose. How a 10mm bolt is supposed to hold a clamp-like semicircle of metal against the plastic end of the filler tube is known only to the German engineer who created this the day before his urlaub began.
The outer sleeve that fits over the lower tube was mostly gone..So, I hacked off the bolt (with great care not to let anything slip into the lower tube) and trimmed the tube end to slip further into the lower metal tube, connected them with a short piece of heater hose and clamped them together..ahhhhhh .

Pulled it out of the garage, vacuumed it out from the last trip to Fruita, Colorado, washed it on the outside and got rid of a lot of the mud that was stuck underneath it as I drove out of there in pouring rain on the mud road. Now it's nice and clean to take in for emissions and safety inspection next week.

I removed all the old scratched and purple looking window tint from all windows. I also replaced the rear window seal with a euro style version. It looks so much better.

I can't believe we had 75 degree weather in Seattle this late into the year. I had to take advantage while I could.

Well as I was driving down the road today and smelled a funny smell(always fun when that happens) and I was just pulling into the parking lot when the smell got VERY strong so luckily I could park it and inspect the van safely. I opened the hatch.. no smell, so I looked around and no sign of engine/tranny issues that could have caused the smoke(I didn't expect it to be either of those anyways because the smell was odd and not like the smells the motor/tranny make). Long story short some jerk had taken my wiper and twisted it, and the switch was on from the morning, these together caused the engine to burn out and give me a scare...
Good news.. no HUGE issues
Bad news.. I have to deal with another weekend-long fix now Shame on you
