not warm out, but dry, so I found the time to finally change the oil and put in the pop-top shocks. I struggled to lift the top with a Rocketbox on before, now, with JackBombay's medium strength kit it's about as easy as it used to be unloaded. I'm guessing it'll be fingerlite without the box up there. Pretty easy install, given my limited skills.

Installed a new CA catalytic converter today and noticed that they've been eating their spinach in the last few years.

Who's going to pass smog tomorrow... (ME ME ME!)

I went thru this CA Cat. issue a couple of months ago.

What I learned:
For God's sake, check your O2 sensor(s)!!
A bad sensor will kill a cat faster than you might imagine. (In my case about 100 miles...)

I also found that in Ca. the replacement cat. must have a CARB EO # stamped on the housing to be legal.
To avoid potential problems at visual insp, you might want to install it so the stamped #s are easy to see..

The cat sold by GW and VC is a Magnaflow #339918 (I believe the P/N is correct) and is Ca legal replacement for WBX Vanagons, it has the EO# stamped on housing.

If you are running a Subi conversion as I am, the plot will thicken...

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

So, it wasn't today -- but it's the last thing I was able to do to the van before unexpectedly going into the hospital for a week and then my subsequent recovery from a staph infection. ugh.

But hey, our van looks bad ass! Removed all plastic panels from Winnebago that had faded and browned over the years and sprayed them back to OG color using dove gray dye from RightLook.com (thanks to the folks at PopTopHeaven for the tip on what to use). The van looks so darn good now.

(I've got a few more pictures of the process if anyone is interested)

Next step is to replace the felt-covered celling panels with baltic birch panels to really spruce, er birch, it up.

I've had these later model headrests for a few years, thinking they might get mounted on the rear seat..no, not there..I use my slip-over headrests I use on my beetle when we have passengers..but, on the fronts the driver seat now clears the window when I rotate it..nice. I'm getting used to the "non-stock" look in exchange for functionality..one brick is as good as another..needs a cushion, then just right!

I bug-bombed it and vacuumed the interior top to bottom. I saw one too many bugs just pop up from between the dash and windshield and felt the need to do something about it.

I also found a pinhole leak in the brake master cylinder and will be swapping it out this coming weekend.

Finally got my 16" GoWesty Steel Wheels with the Michelin Defenders. Also added 1/2in spring shims to the rear, no more sag.

Got some ski bum renters this weekend and had to put the winter tires on the van. Here she is floating above the ground ...

on the FOUR floor jacks that Discount Tire (in Arvada on Wadsworth) used - they actually slipped one of the jacks and nearly sent my van to the concrete, but it thankfully was supported by the other three. I will never go back to Discount Tire after seeing their jackassery today and thankfully didn't have to pay for it after reaming them a new one.

Nice work!

Where did you get those? How much did they cost? And, how do you secure them? Might come in handy some time!

Hey, Tam...German EBay..oops, ist das vord verboten? Enshuldiegung sie, bitte.
Well, they weren't cheap, I seem to recall $60+ each and they were the only ones like that I've seen since. Vintage accessory for early Cabriolet. They have two straps that slip under the seat back and friction buckle to two corresponding straps on the other side, behind the seat back. That was the OG color, too. They are quite "springy", offer a good amount of resistance but soft to the touch.. and are basically held in place by your own body weight, I think they'd be effective in a rear ender, and better that having your head snap off with no head restraint at all.
I lived in Stuttguart for 4 years courtesy of the US Army.. Your tax dollars at work. Drove a 78 Bay Westy, I didn't know working for the government could be so nice, (as long as the Soviet Army stayed on their side of the Fulda Gap)
Non German speaker,? just use a computer translator and "copy and paste" away. Search for vintage headrests of something like that...feile Gluck!

looks good. Parked at the Humboldt north jetty? I've been too scared to take my 2WD out through the dunes the couple times I've surfed there.

I reinstalled my newly repaired speedometer (odometer fix).

I also changed out the rear hatch shocks. Hopefully the hatch stays up in the cold now.

+1, I just did this too! Of course, the new awesome GW strut I just installed on left-rear side is exactly the same part# as the one I removed, which was only installed ~2-years ago - which makes me doubt the quality of the part. "Luckily" I ordered a set because I wasn't sure if I needed one or both, so now I have a spare for about 2-years from now Rolling Eyes

Been putting this off for years, literally. Finally got around to replacing the broken single-stage LP regulator with a new 2-stage regulator. No cutting/flaring involved for my van. The first attempt had some minor leaks so went back with teflon tape and everything is sealed tight now.

**Why did I wait so long to do this?** Rolling Eyes

Today I replaced the charcoal canister and the valve dealie that it connects to, the Temp 2 Sensor, a headlight bulb, and two door panels with home made ones
