Finally got around to reinstalling a stereo in my van, after nearly a year without one. This was removed from one of my other cars which is going down for extended repairs. Not a huge fan of Kenwoods, but this is certainly better than nothing. Can't seem to get Bluetooth to play nice with my iPhone 6, though.
One of the cool little mods I added is a toggle (below the heater controls), that allows me to select either keyed 12v or battery, so I can run the stereo without a key should I desire. Can't believe it took me over thirty years to finally add this feature to one of my rigs
I also got around to installing my German made Gloria fire extinguisher just ahead of the front seat. These fit the forward base of the drivers seat on a Mercedes, so this position is a natural in this application.

Hey Mikie!
PM me! I have been wanting to let you know how we made out this summer, but I can't find the card you gave me. This is really weird...I maybe check this thread once per year.
Mikie helped us out big time this summer on one of those completely random breakdown situations...
Great guy with a really cool EV camper.
The top looks great!

I am going to try to get to BusFusion this year.
Haha -- the randomness was you, not the breakdown! Showing up from apparently nowhere, out of the blue, at just the right moment. I split the end of the coolant return from the collection ring to the water pump. I had just finished cutting off the split end and reconnecting, when a guy from down the road had stopped in, on his way to Canadian Tire. "Need anything?", he said..."Tools, coolant, hoses?" I said no, we're good I think, and he left. I started up, the hose immediately split again, and was not long enough for another attempt. I thought great, now what are we going to do?
It was at that instant you 'randomly' showed up. With new hose, and we were on our way.

...picked up my latest purchase (another '97 EVC) last night after getting a new waterproof tent fabricated/installed locally, spent from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. last night gutting/cleaning/detailing the camper and scrubbing out the grubbiness leftover from the PO as well as installing a new CD player. Got it sparkling by about 1 a.m. then realized I still needed to drain the fresh and gray water tanks. Spent the rest of my night doing that and creating a small frozen pond in my back yard. Still, got it up and ready for a (extremely stoked) ski bum renter we picked up at noon today at DIA before sending him on his way to Winter Park. I'll get the van back next week, pull all of the interior plastic panels and dye them back to the original gray. As of now they're a (not so) lovely shade of brown. _________________ -------

I installed my new to me locker panel circuit board and flashing light system for the front locker. I still have to finalize one of the light wires but it's all in there.
I also reassembled the right side sliding window and made it ready for install tomorrow. _________________ Patrick Brown

I installed the replacement sliding window assembly in the sliding door. That one was a bit harder than the other seals I've replaced. My fingers are still hurting from pulling on the rope.
I also finished the wiring on my locker panel. _________________ Patrick Brown

Oh, good point! The cleanest of them all, so that would be the TerraPodz. Easy install, and love the amount of light. Later I might wire them a bit differently as for now they are on all the time. Great upgrade. _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Now where to start. Guess I'll start with the big stuff. After our trip from Ak to FL last summer,
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=599044&highlight=akwestyy
my EJ22 rings were shot. I contemplated putting the engine on a stand in the garage and putting rings in this winter. Instead I found a 72k mile EJ22 on SWEngines.com for $1,000. Last weekend I yanked the old and put in the newish motor. The engine feels good, real good. I haven't put the compression or leak down test on it yet. Maybe this weekend. Took it for a ride Sunday evening and the rear main is slinging oil. I knew I should have put one in it before I bolted it up. Oh well I guess this weekend, out comes the trans. Thats OK I have a final drive seal leaking on it so I will do that while its out. Family loved the 50 mile drive since we haven't driven it all winter. My kids complained the rear speakers were not working. I had been putting off the additional ground wire that needed to be run from the head unit back to eliminate the shared "ground" the factory wired. Today I pulled the head unit and resoldered my connections with heat shrink and ran the blasted wire to the back speakers. That was fun. Oh and while on our drive I found out the blower motor is frozen up and the smell of burning wires filled the air. Looks like the wiring is good and the switch checks out. Probably a frozen bearing that is common. Ugh the realization that the dash is coming out.....I guess I will save up for a new heater core also. Thank goodness for the knowledge found on The Samba! _________________ 84' Westy 2wd

I had a small oil leak that has turned into a larger leak. I pulled the lower engine tin assuming that I had leaky pushrod tubes. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch. I replaced that and now no leak. I thought the lower sensor was supposed to be the blue version. I pulled a brown one from that spot. I'll so more forum searching.
The front exhaust nut was fun to get off. It had rusted to the point where there was a lot of slop on the tool. I ended up using a 13.. six-point socket with a wobble extension. I picked up a replacement nut at the hardware store.
The downside is that in the process I banged my face on the removed piece of engine tin while climbing out from under the van. There is a nice gash to the left side of my left eye and much blood. Sad.
At least there is no more leak. _________________ Patrick Brown

I feel your pain. I've often said that if CSI ever needs a DNA sample for me they just need to swab down the bus. I've left plenty of blood on it over the years. _________________ Dave O

Finally getting my front end put back together after a couple weeks of cleaning, painting, and waiting for parts. Replaced LCA bushings, Radius Arm Bushings, Lower Ball Joints, sway bar bushings, end link bushings. Also rebuilt the Calipers, had the bearings repacked, replaced the rotten brake lines with stainless, and swapped out my worn and leaking shocks for some good used ones.
Had someone press in the ball joints and pack the bearings but everything else was not too bad for a first timer. The LCA bushings were a pain - I couldn't get them pressed in all the way and then had 3 shops try to do it with no success. I finally got it done with some All Thread, PVC pipe, a couple of nuts, and a bunch of large washers.

I added a simple volt meter attached to my house and starter battery on a 3 way rocker switch (Starter/Off/House). I built a small wooden box and painted it to match the hearing aid beige cabinets
Along with a new Blue Sea fuse block. The fuse block has 12 slots for more additions in the future. I also have been using the unused slots to disconnect and store the fuses for stuff that I dont need connected all the time like the propex, inverter, and galley.
I also installed the GW Exterior LED Bulb Kit.
Next project is to install some solar.... _________________ 86 2.4L 2WD Peloquin Westy |

I changed my oil and filter. I had to pull the filter anyway to get at the pushrod tube cover bolts. Used Valvoline 20/50 oil and a Wix filter.
I had changed my lower oil pressure switch a few days ago to fix a leak.
Now I have a blinking oil warning light at all RPMs. The sensor wire was questionable when I changed the sensor. I'll run a new wire tomorrow and see if the light clears up. _________________ Patrick Brown

^^^ Just curious - was it blue or gray...???
On one of the first nice days this month, I rolled the van forward in the garage
to re-dope and re-snug the OP senders I plumbed in last year for my OP gauge
& low pressure sender manifold. I hate oil leaks, & I'm pretty sure this will stop
the annoying drip...
Not ready to take the van out yet (since there's probably another snowstorm or
two in store) but it's great to get a little bit done & be more ready for summer!
