The one I removed was brown. The replacement is blue. The brown signal wire was baked and very brittle with signs of insulation coming off. _________________ Patrick Brown

Finally replaced my dingy 32 year old carpet.
Waiting on the front carpets to come in. _________________ 1983 2WD 1.9 Digijet |

Installed the new T3 anti-sway bar and bushings.
Had a heck of a time installing the new lower stabilizer link bushings. I didn't have new sleeves so used the old ones, but wow, just couldn't get the new lower bushing in on either side. I ended up putting in the top new bushing, and re-used the compressed old bushings to see if the top one would seat with some driving, and then I'd have enough room to get the nut to bite on the threads.
Anyone have some words of wisdom on how to do this? Tried channel locks, C clamps, everything.

I'm off today ... I installed this 15 amp outlet on the kitchen bulkhead instead of the yard work I was supposed to do. I saw this particular power outlet in another post on this thread. I'll use it run a hillbilly window a/c setup (I previously ran an extension cord).
Inside the cabinet; I used a low-profile single-gang box.

It's pretty easy if you use a bar.
Over the top of your anti-sway bar, into a rung of the springs. .
lever it down and get some threads on _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

I replaced the original brown wire for the low oil pressure switch. I had replaced the sensor last week and ended up with a blinking oil light. The old wire was is very bad shape. I ran a new one and went for a test drive. It seems to be fine now.
I'll get this 2.1 into shape just in time for a Subaru 2.5 swap. _________________ Patrick Brown

Burley UCAs with upper ball joints, repacked front wheel bearings, other front end bushings. It's a lot quieter and more solid now! _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

It's been a flurry of van-related program activities lately, here at Casa de Chaos. Last Friday the lady n' kids were planning a weekend trip up to Hansville in the Quattro, so I was Tetrising the vehicles around in preparations. I hopped into the van and found that the trans grinded in all gears--aka no clutch syndrome. I suspected the clutch master had died (I recently did the slave), so I propped up my iPhone on the WBX, set it to video and then worked the pedal a few times. It showed me that the clutch arm was moving fully. Shit, no go and no working vehicles over a weekend, so it was time to act bold and decisively. I contacted my buddy to see if he had any good used or new clutch kits around his shop. He told me to swing by and rummage. I did, and ended up pulling a good disc and pressure plate from one of his spare 2.1 engines, and a good TO bearing from an 091/1. He gave me a new main seal from the RJE 2.3 WBX he's building, and a flywheel o-ring, that turned out to be for a type I engine. I ended up using an oddball o-ring from a Mercedes.
[Cut to the chase man, you're losing the audience]
Dropped the trans on my slightly sloped driveway, while using the stoopid HF trans jack with one broken caster that soon became two broken casters. Bloody idiots apparently spot welded the tops of the casters to the bearing section, so they break cleanly right off at the stud. Don't buy this item:
Turns out that the clutch disc had glued itself to the flywheel due to all the years of deferred maintenance of the obviously leaking main seal. Let that be a lesson to you kids; Don't talk back to your parents...and don't try to push obvious problems just that one last mile.
Anyhoo...buttery smooth clutch
While I was out there at Bill's parts lending library in the woods, I also borrowed a manual window regulator from one of his '80 Westfalia parts rigs. He gave me a really rough looking dark brown door panel from the same, which I wanted to use temporarily along with the regulator. I've been driving around for months with no door panel after my last effort to resurrect the failing electric regulators failed successfully. Since I plan on swapping in some kind of hybrid Mercedes or BMW version in the future, I wanted to be able in the meantime to use a drive up ATM without awkward contortions through the rear of the door.
Since I didn't want a brown panel, I cleaned it up, cut out the ripped section in the middle, cut a hole for the PM switch, painted it grey and fabricated a new center section out of cardboard and faux suede. Since the speakers I had stuck out too much, I ended up using a folding sunroof handle from a Dasher.
Voilą! grey is the new brown
Oh yeah, one more thing...
I glued a felt liner to the inside of the pocket, 'cause it's unseemly to have gum wrappers rattling around inside a plastic enclosure. Chicks dig the details

PostPosted: Today 3:23 pm Post subject: 71 Westy A/C using inverter Reply with quote Edit/Delete this post
I KNOW THIS IS OFF SUBJECT BUT CANT GET A RESPONSE OTHERWISE:
I connected my 5000 BTU window unit to my 2000 watt Centech inverter in my camper and ran "BOB" at idle for 45 minutes. The a/c pulls 540 watts on high cool and 4.8 amps, I had my volt meter connected to the inverter and saw only 5 volt drop between fan running and then high cool. I am no electrician but try to think outside the box. So what gives? Will this pull my deep cycle battery down after a period of time? |

Yes, yes we do. That's why I gotta ask: What's with the dirty step pad?
Work to my van in the past week: Bought a Hitch Haul, which wouldn't fit into the receiver due to the receiver's rounded corners, which required a trip to Harbor Freight to get a riser adapter, which actually worked great; but now I need to drill new hitch pin holes in the Hitch Haul. After all that, checked the gear oil level and found it needed topping off... mmm, nothing like the sweet bouquet of sulfur. _________________ ~Kamz

When I installed my gauges I wanted them visible yet not intrusive. So a row of (3)three fit rather well where I put them. The only issue was when driving the stock Vanagon steering wheel would hide (2)two of them
So I looked, asked, looked online, asked more, and looked in junkyards for some time. I could not find one of the South African wheels I wanted. I posted a WTB add and still no response. Then I was told to check out a Vanagon Shop in Washington State. They hooked me up to what I was looking for.
Now all the gauges are visible. The wheel was a direct bolt on plug and play!
I couldn't be happier! Thanks!
"Peace"
(The volt meter will soon be coming off. The PO had one mounted there. Once my Dual Cluster comes from Brickwerks via T3. It will go where the ashtray sits along with an oil temp gauge.)
That should clean the dash and gauges up nicely! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

I just installed the Fuel Filter upgrade from Bus Depot in my 84 Westy. It replaces the plastic cube one and moves the new style canister filter to the discharge side of the pump.
My fuel pump is MUCH happier... and not growling at me. I actually think the engine runs better...
Should have done this long ago.

Fixed the right rear door on my euro today. It got damaged when a cast iron planter fell against it in the driveway during a storm last summer.
Despite a lot of other dings/scrapes and other minor damages on the bus I couldn't bear to look at this one any longer (just too nasty). Didn't spend a lot of time on it just roughed out the sheetmetal and a quick mud job on it, I plan on doing a complete refinish of the bus in the next couple years anyhow(likely a 20 year birthday present for it). Hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot a bit of fresh cyber green on it one evening this week so I can get it hung back on the bus asap

Had an intake gasket leak, couldn't leave well-enough alone, now refurbing the fuel injection hoses, runners and injectors.

wow everyone had such a busy weekend all I got done was finally add my T3 alternator harness upgrade, and order a replacement hub cap for the one that has been missing since I bought Yogi in the fall.
Very happy with the upgrade it seems to have finally smoothed out my idle, so that tells me that another wiring issue has been corrected.
Important to remember just cause your van has low mileage doesn't mean that things haven't degraded same as any high mileage unit.
Off topic, this van is so much easier to work on that my Mercedes. I see people complain about the VW engineers, you should check out what they were doing in Stuttgart. _________________ Brent H
