Got my van a week ago and I've started tracking down air and oil leaks.
Decided to check out the fuel lines.
So I've been replacing all those for the last 2 days.
Also set the valve clearance and a friend helped me installed a third tail light.

Replaced the gear oil in the tranny with half Royal Purple MaxGear and half Pennzoil Synchromesh.
Shifts like a dream.
Also installed a new rad fan speed resistor. I only had high speed, which came on only after the radiator got pretty damn hot. _________________ 1991 Tintop GL Manual tranny, EJ22 |

Hi, guys. I replaced the Boss head unit, because it sucks big time. It all started with me wanting a back up camera. So I bought one at Auto Zone with the tiny monitor, and that didn't last long. Then I tried to go wireless, not a happy ending, either. I finally bought a good for the price back up camera and a Chinese DVD receiver with a nice screen, since our vans can't accept the motorized hidden screen stereos. That one didn't work for long (still under warranty but they want it shipped to China for service, so it's hidden in a box), and I made the mistake to buy the Boss re-manufactured DVD receiver. First it came with the wrong connector, so the seller had to send me the correct one. The user's manual is a bad photocopy of the original, the output sucks, the Bluetooth went nuts, and now the back up camera turns on for a bit when I start the radio. Anyways, here's my new acquisition, an Axxera Multimedia DVD receiver with Bluetooth:
The screen is 10.1" LCD.
Compared to the Boss unit.
My back up camera.
How close it is to the gear selector.
The A/C knob almost hidden.
Had to sacrifice the ventilation faceplate and remove the fan knob (I rarely used them).
The stereo sounds great, has HDMI input, a USB port for charging my phone and it's DualMirror ready. It's a tight fit, specially the wiring, and it has an extra mounting frame, so it could stick out a little bit further, bit it will still cover the ventilation fan knob. Check it out:

First, I built an upper bed extension for my 2 1/2 year old (her sister is only 14 months, she will stay in the pack-n-play till next summer). It leaves about 4 inches at he front of the van. Our daughter loves it..she calls it "the pillow door that daddy made me!" The first pic. is the dry fit of the 3/4 plywood. The second is the fabric covering. I painted the bottom whit and installed 2 metal (5 inch) tabs along the rear edge to hold it down.
Second, this was our first trip using the Thule box. I DO NOT have my rack mounted to the fiberglass, it attaches to the gutter. Yes, this is on purpose, so I have dry storage for all of the 'whatever' when camping. It takes my wife and I about 4 minutes to remove it from the roof.
Last is the cup holder I got at BusDepot. It is GREAT! No screws, just mounts in the ashtray opening AND the ashtray remains in place and works.

I installed my new radiator, silicon radiator hoses, stainless cooling lines, and SA grill and lights.
My first radiator came out of the box bent. Van Cafe was great and got me a new one right away.
I powder coated the fan shroud and radiator support brackets so this project took longer than normal.
I have not added coolant yet. I still need to secure the stainless lines at the rear. I wrapped the stainless in heavy vinyl where they contact the body to electrically isolate them. I'll try to get this wrapped up tomorrow. _________________ Patrick Brown

Just got Yogi back from my mecanic yesterday with a new rad...he estimated that the front end is now 15-20lbs lighter. then I put on my new fender flares from TerraWagen. They look great and hide the po damage to the rear wheel arches making the van look less like its owned by some one who doesn't know how to drive. _________________ Brent H

Finally got tired of the rear end sag due to the suby conversion so I took some old toilet partitions, cut out some spacers, and in under an hour had my van rear end lifted up a lil higher than the front...I'm right at 17" in front and 17.5" in the rear, whereas the rear used to be about 16". Very noticeable to my eyes but I guess most people on the road wouldn't see it. _________________ 1986 Hightop w/EJ25 DOHC & 4EAT auto

Can you take a pic of the part that goes in the ashtray? Really curious how they did that. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Drove it over 420 miles from Albany NY to Orono, ME (alma mater where I met the mrs.) with the wife and three younger kids.
Took about 8 hours altogether. Ran great overall.
Hope I am not jinxing the ride home. _________________ 1991 Tintop GL Manual tranny, EJ22 |

I worked on my GW auxiliary battery set-up which i partly installed last year, i never go to cutting the wires on the fuse panel... But i decided to cut the wire for the radio fuse 9 and hooked it up with success. Then I decided to try wiring a radio toggle switch in, and a connection for a Coleman solar panel... Well that's when I burnt out two fuses and fried a voltmeter... well it's in there now and some day i'll brave the fuse 8 connectors what i thought would be a 2-3 hour job was the whole day haha |

Emptied it of all personal stuff after a decade of ownership. Loaded it with all the stuff I have collected over time.
Sold it on eBay. Goodbye to Beluga... after your second engine failure (blown head gasket) we are saying adios.
Oh, there may be another one someday, but for now. Good bye. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia |

repaired three norcold fridges (relighter board replacement)
put a new tent in a Eurovan top (made locally from rubberized canvas)
glued a new headliner in a Eurovan
new tires on my '88 (bfg at 195s)
removed rack mounts from a eurovan after nearly tearing off a roof on a low-hanging basketball goal on my neighbors garage
fixed broken interior door latch in a 97 EVC ($.47 replacement part took two hours of fiddling to fit)
And I removed/repacked (fought with)/fitted the CVs on my baywindow, but that's for another forum... _________________ -------

Washed the van up because it needed it and applied a syncro sticker to the spare tire cover. Turned out sweet, but time will tell on stick longevity.
I cleaned the sticker area with mineral spirits and very carefully rubbed on the entire sticker, then rubbed more as I pulled past each letter, then rubbed each letter enough so that the texture of the cover telegraphs through the letters.
