I just checked with my local upholstry shop and the estimate i got was $300 for the foam to do the full sized Z bed. (foam only)
I guess that is why I went cheap the last time. Just wondering what some of you have found for good seat foam and if you have any links.
thanks,

Find a local packaging company... I work for one here in Toronto. That much foam shouldn't be more than $50, but some companies will be reluctant to make a small cash sale.. Good luck. _________________ Check out my video series at www.youtube.com/midnightoilgarage

Good foam is expensive due to it being made from petroleum products. _________________ "I reject your reality and replace it with my own"

but not 300 for a Z bed...
petro is spensive cuz tax credits were created for corps that move operations out of the country, which in turn, created larger demand for oil... yikes WTF? |

| Wow...I just got a bunch of plaid material for a future "recovery" project. My Z-bed needs foam replaced on the passenger side. I heard it wasn't cheap to redo if you take it somewhere's. Guess I have to look around for a reasonable offer. |

Don't know if you or your wife/gfriend/sig other can sew, but this book gives extremely good descriptions of custom interior fabrication...would definitely save you some $$

Many sources listed. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

$300 sounds near top of the line. i did two sections on a 75 westy 4-5 years ago and paid near $110 for premium foam. i washed the polyester and stapled it together. arm rests - the works. what a 4 star sleeper. cheap foam is for flippers!
i read today that the 90-something dollar oil barrel is putting the states at the inflation rate seen with early 1980's oil prices. its a petrochemical world. all most of us can do is unwrap the lollipop and suck.
..what percentage of lollipops are wrapped in plastics? |

When I bought my Foam, they told me the Reason that the price is so high for them was that the major Manufacturer of Foam is In New Orleans, and Hurricane Katrina was a factor.
I guess they would have any exceuse for me Paying aroud 170$ for Mine.
Oh Well, the new Foam makes a Huge Difference. I got 4" Medium Density. |

its what THAT market will bear... boats are so much work that people wont do them if it isnt cheap for the parts.

No stores like a discount building center. I think I might just have to deal with the current seat condition for know and wrap some closed cell foam sheets that I have for kayak padding to level them up.
thanks,

Does anyone have any input on what foam density to use, where to source it & how much? I'm doing my best to install a full-width bed in another camper I'm restoring & having a helluva time figuring out the foam mystery. I've heard memory foam get's hard as a rock when it's cold, & too smushy when hot. I was hoping someone would chime in & give us the pros & cons of what they've recently purchased/installed.
Thanks,

I have a few Westy beds that I don't mind selling the foam from........It is in good condition though old. I found a place, via my body man's wife (She does upholstery) in ABQ, that sells foam reasonably. For instance, I am purchasing an 4'x8'x5" piece to make a mattress for my trailer for $190.
It's cheaper to buy in a section that does not need to be cut.......cut it yourself and save. I will get the name tomorrow if interested. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Try the local ads.
I go yard selling a lot and when I see good use able foam I grab it. Think I paid only a couple of dollars for some foam to redo my RV's seats. Sure beats spending hundreds.

| I bought a couple of 5" mattress toppers from JC Penney and they are really nice. When you lay on them they barely show an indentation. I went with the 5" to make sure I had plenty of padding in case they crush down later. I bought a queen size and a twin size and they were around $170.00 or so. |

I ran into the same pricing when looking to make a full width bed for mine. I ended up using a regular z-bed and cutting a foam topper to glue together on the end for the extensions. Not to noticeable unless your looking for it.
Had the thought if I do it again, will hit up yard sales/thrift stores and buy an old couch to re-use the foam. $29 sofa or $100+ per sheet of foam?? Gimme an old couch! _________________ The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime.

Hey man, snowed in yet!! I put my gon up for sale, if no sale will be putting the new interior I got in it and taking out the full width. If your interested in the interior give me a shout. Kel could recover to match your scheme, but its a wrap around.
