Kinda stupid the name of this thread was changed, my van can't do anything without me (except burn) and it's all about doing things IN or WITH the van, as opposed to working on it, but I digress...
(Moderator note: The title was changed because too many people confused "with" with "to"; i.e. there were far too many "here's what work I did to my van today" posts in this thread. If anything, the two threads should be combined and this one go bye-bye.)

When out on a weekend geologic field trip to the northern Coachella Valley north of Palm Springs. Camped in a great preserve that was free! Got lots of compliments on the van and several tours. First time on wash board roads and it was not fun. Only a couple miles so I didn't bother to lower the tire pressure, but I felt like I was in a tin can full of marbles. Nothing broke and nothing fell off so I'm guessing it's all still OK. The trip up tot he Palm Springs Aerial Tram was dicey, the van got nice and hot (but did not overheat) up the long and deceptively steep hill.

Picked up our 1985 Westy, "Beluga" from the detailers. Wow! A complete transformation. Beautiful and money well spent.

Now it makes me want to paint it Smile

Spent the day driving around with the wife and dog. We went to a craft fair, where the dog and
I parked next to a river and watched folks out for a paddle. Then picked up the wife from the fair
and we drove to the lake, where we poped the top and I cooked Chicken Diane. We ate lunch and
then headed for home, beautiful Autumn day!

Just shivered a bit today. Huddled under my snowy blankie.
Should have headed south with the geese...
The snow crept up on me

Scooby's driver has been yearning to get out on the highway for several days. This city daily driver is fine but Scooby likes the open road better. Left early am today with gunshipbattle grey skies, like you know somethings coming. Had a GREAT drive fast, slow, flat, hills, Scooby really likes to show off.

Once we turned around the heavens opened and hard rain. The tires gripped the road just great and a fun trip home.

I suppose my yearnings (Scooby's too) are because it'll be off the road soon, time to get some serious work done i.e. glow plugs and dropping my fuel tank and replacing hoses, grommets and seeing what's with the fuel tank sender. The former job I'm having done, the second job I'll be doing with some help on the physicality aspects. Then if no salt out and about will drive some more. This year I have front heat so that's a big improvement over last year.

I'm just about ready to detach and remove the gauges on top of the cluster. Just about comfortable with the cluster functions. My my what improvements over 2 years ago, say what = happy and confident with my van now. Very Happy

Met up with a friend to grab a beer, but found several of the local watering holes closed for storm prep. : /
Fear not! With my trusty Truck Fridge always at the ready and well stocked we braved the storm and took a back trail to a nice wooded spot to relax to some Mumford and Sons (I just got the new album, finally) and drink beers. On the way out, we realized that we had actually been on a section of the Rachel Carson Hiking Trail....
Apparently my syncro can handle a couple of hundred yards of hiking trail!
It was impossible to tell as it was all covered in wet leaves, but we made it back out without a hitch.

Gota love the swiss army knife of a syncro, always ready.

Made a run to HoDepot for eight 80# bags of concrete for the first install of our back steps project. Since this task takes priority over camping I feel okay putting the Westy to work earning its keep, keeping the Mopar minivan free for dog trips to the river while the concrete stays dry awaiting mixing. The Westy barely registered the effect of the increased weight.

Today I fitted VW emblems to my CLK wheels and tried to work out how the center bulb in the instrument cluster fits in. I pulled it out, but I think I broke something off. Can someone post a picture of theirs so I can see how a non-broken one looks.

Much appreciated.

Rolled up on the Limbo group, and had some brunch with them. Three bays, two Vanagons and a splittie (in a pear tree)

Chatted about VWs, inhaled some eggs and then went for a ride with Radiorental.

Stopped in on the Bostig team on Friday. Saw the Monk-eemobile there. Looking good.

Enjoyed driving with a smooth idle, clatter free lifters, and a properly charging alternator/battery all the way to the DMV to get the beast registered (finally, 3 months after purchase). The pain of swiping my card for that much money was relieved as I walked out to the Westy and marveled in the fact that I can now drive it legally.
I came home to another package waiting for me, my new Febi (made in Spain-wtf?) upper ball joints! The bushings are in another box in the other room awaiting some free time and motivation to get my vanagon steering right and aligned! Can't wait to have evenly wearing tires and a non-wandering wheel!

Spent the evening chasing materials for a Saturday house project. With the weather in the 50's it was perfect to get outside. Crisscrossing Riverside in my quest for the rights parts, I was reminded how good the old Vanagon has been running lately (knocking on wood somewhere). I was disappointed for the ride to end when I returned home.

More concrete, this time the Westy carried 20 80# bags and the Mopar minivan only had to tote 10. I'm amazed how well the Westy did with that much weight in it. It might have been near its limit (allowing for the camper interior) but hauled it like a champ and without a whimper.

Embarassed Embarassed ran out of diesel just where two mega highways were merging into one during the evening rush hour traffic!!!!! As usual my fault as I have been running the van a lot in this past month without moving it (before I replaced the glow plugs) so therefore km driven actually lower than diesel used. Dumb dumb dumb. A chap stopped to make sure I was okay. He wasn't in it but he has an 83.5 Vanagon too.

I haven't had much time or energy to work on the van getting it ready for winter. I'll be out there compounding in the snow me thinks and for sure dropping the fuel tank REGARDLESS of the weather. I've got to get a readable gauge level in there! Embarassed Embarassed Brick wall

Yeppers Brick wall d'oh! Gotta get a working fuel level gauge in that van. Each run out follows a period of the van being run but not moving and then my tripometer reads low and I think I have another 100+ km until I need fuel. It's very frustrating and dumb dumb. Embarassed I should also say it usually happens when I'm low on cash, otherwise I top up much sooner.
