Left Bellingham, WA on Tuesday afternoon and drove to Denver over the next two days.
Got here(Denver) yesterday evening.
Van did great except for the fuel hose popping off the plastic pipe at the "firewall", grrrr.
My own fault as that's happened once before and I didn't get rid of the stupid plastic pipe at that time.
That's next on the chopping block for sure, just gonna run a length of hose frome the "T" in the engine bay, to the fuel pump.
It was windy as all hell, I was on the front of a winter storm for most of the trip. Melba, the amazing Vanagon, kept her mighty shoulders square to the task at hand for 1500, relentless, windy miles. |
Allo
Do you know how long this plastic pipe lasts? Could it cause a fire?
Thanks

^^^ A: Not long enough...
Yes, it's a known & dangerous weak link in the fuel system on our aging vans.
Options to replace include an expensive metal version, or simply remove it
and run fuel line straight through the firewall…common safety upgrade. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Took the mountain road between Victoria and NSW, Australia (Syncro territory). A week before the bush fires arrived.

Hey Jon,
I would like to know what the top of your van does... Does the whole thing pop up?
Nice Syncro, and a stunning location to drive it around in!
cheers,

Hi Schlappette,
Yes full length pop-top by a local (Sydney) company called Trakka. A lot of the roof it cut out to make way for it and some people don't like them from a structural rigidity point of view. Trakka claimed that they were stronger than the original roof though. I believe they are one of the best looking conversions as the final result is quite discrete.
Cheers.
Jon.

700+ kilos of railroad ties. Hope I didn't push the old shocks too hard! A single cab would have been more appropriate.

A little late, but picked up my new (first) van january 2nd, in Redwood City, CA"
Drove to rte. 40 and stayed the night in the Mojave National Preserve (that's me hanging onto my new love):
Then drove 40, to 44, to 55, to chicago, dropped my friend off and then drove to Maine, where it will stay until the salt is gone, which can't come soon enough. Luckily, there was no snow when I dropped it off, so it could get to the garage, and not just be tarped. I can't wait until the summer, where I will be spending three months driving though out all of upstate NY.
finally home:
This was during the first "polar vortex", I brought decent cold weather camping, but not that cold, AZ and NM were only single digits during the day! Only got to camp one night, can't wait for many, many more... |

We took the van (or did it take us?) on a run on Saturday to recce part of the Kennet & Avon canal and the River Thames from Newbury, through Reading to Marlow. We are a support crew for a team in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe race over the Easter weekend and need to know where and how we can access the canal/river to supply food and drink at frequent intervals.
There is still an awful lot of water everywhere with some roads and stretches of towpath flooded. The Thames was flowing very fast, too.
The trip provided an opportunity to test out our new kitchen unit by making brews of tea. No cooking yet but this was a start. _________________ Garyd

Have a look here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=586856 for pics of van and kitchen. If you want pics of the canal, locks, etc, let me know.
I didn't take any that clearly include both van and locks. _________________ Garyd

Got up early, for a trip over to Port Gamble. Some XC Mtn bike racing in the rain. Was great being able to change out of my wet/muddy riding gear, inside, and out of the rain.
Next up: Hauling my offroad m/c over to the Desert 100 _________________ 86' Wolfsburg weekender 2.1, 4spd, , merian brown |

Not sure if I have shared this yet. I installed an over ride switch on my sliding door so I don't have to turn each individual light off when I want to leave the door open.

you didn't need to adda seperate switch trunk switches from 90s jettas have a notch cut into them for this purpose, or you can just cut a notch in it yourself.
here's a trick from this thread, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4939913#4939913
convert that new switch to an amber LED light under the door to light up the ground when camping. _________________

All of the interior lighting except the map light are turned on by switches located on the doors. The switches are ground interrupt so no concerns with grounding out a hot wire. The light fixtures themselves have (if equipped) three positions: on, off, on with door open. If yours is set up right you can change the switch at the fixture to the opposite position and it should work.
danfromsyr= great, now I get this tip, lol. Thanks, might still do it! _________________ I have never owned a VW I didn't like, but there have been a few Fords and Chevy's.
