Very interesting car. Note it has VW38 bumpers but is fitted with a wartime KdF license plate/brake light. According to Chris Barber (page 173) the VW had the license plate/brake light redesigned in 1939. Going by period photos it seems that some of the VW38 cars had the newer lights retrofitted. This picture may as well be of a VW38 taken, of course, in the war years as evidenced by the blacked out headlights.

What's with the front hood, early form of customisation? Home made? Picking one up from the breakers yard was too expensive?
