i just finished buildin a 1915 for my car and have been talkin to a few random thingers at shows here and there, and been tellin them what i got planned with my car and what not. one guy told me since im buildin a bigger motor to go with a bus tranny. and since not sure what the condition of my tranny is its not a bad idea and cheaper since i have a bus motor i can throw in. my question is i was told i need to buy an install kit for a 3 rib tranny where can i find one of these and is it really needed? thanks |

There's a lot of good threads on this forum pertaining to this subject. In my limited experience, the Bus trannys have lower (slower) gearing that the standard Thing unit, which means you'll be running at a lower road speed for a given engine rpm. Busses needed this, even with the T-4 engines, just so they could get going.
The standard Thing gearbox is already a little tougher than a Beetle unit, (don't know why, wiser minds than mine can confirm this) and unless you plan on drag-racing, it should be fine.
The T-1 (Thing) and the T-4(Bus) engines have the same mounting configuration, so they'll bolt up to either trans without an adapter. You'll need to make sure the clutch works with whatever you end up using. |

I'm not so sure that's true. Two items to think about are the trans mount to the car, and the engine mount to the trans. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

The original Thing tranny are not the same as a Bug tranny and are a little stronger. With a mild 1915 I would just keep the thing trany unless you plan on drag racing it or doing some heavy duty off-road driving. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Agreed. Unless you are going to do some really hardcore offroading, keep your Thing trans. _________________

well the only reason why im considering this is one dont really know the condition of the thing tranny or if its even the original tranny. so if the tranny in the car is shot i just have one layin around that i can put in so therefore its cheaper to me then to rebuild |
