The other day I ran out of gas (gauge isn't working yet) on a busy three lane street. I'm next to the curb, and about to block traffic for at least 20 min. ----I cock the wheels , put it in reverse and use the starter to hop the curb (both front and back wheels) and park so my drivers side tires are just touching the curb and not blocking traffic at all! _________________ Somewhere there is a jar with your name on it!

Good for you !
It's also nice to drive a vehicle that is totally bereft of any anti-idiot devices! _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Absolutely.
I had to drive a new car the other day. I was sitting in a queue, on a slight downhill, waiting for the ticket booth. Since it was a few minutes between any movement, everyone switched their motors off - this was on a little National Park entry road right... So it came time to move, OK, I thought put in neutral (auto), release handbrake, roll forward one car's length, no biggie. WRONG! Can't move the gear lever. Why the f*** not? Engine isn't running. Huh? But the gearbox is a completely separate system. Stupid. OK, fine, start the motor. Try to move gear lever. Still won't. Oh, foot not on the brake. Retarded system, the foot brake is even less a part of the gearbox than the motor. Silly thing gave me the shits. Then it started beeping at me, something to do with the door or seatbelts or some crap. Absolutely idiotic.
None of that stupidity in my Busses.
Cheers, A. |

I did the electric car starter thing when I ran out of gas near Baltimore on the way back from Bullibrigade.
The stupid signs said food and fuel near BWI airport, and it was over 12 miles of winding around the airport roads until the gas station.
Had to get it off the road, and the starter did the trick! _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Yeah, modern cars that are supposedly idiot proof are stupid. The rental car I was issued locks itself, won't unlock the hatch without a major chore game, has all that steering/shift/foot-on-brake/e-brake interlock garbage, can't open the hood, and then they put all the fluid bottles in a cluster so you can add water to the brake fluid. I've used my bus starter many a time to get that extra bit. I remember in driver training (do they still have that?) they used to teach the starter trick. So, are you saying the RGBs gave you clearance or lower gears? |

I was going to title this " couldn't do this in a "slammed bus!"-----but I didn't want to be "negative"

One I did like was on an old Fiat. The ignition would cut out if there was no oil pressure. _________________ Somewhere there is a jar with your name on it!

LOL - you left this one out of the BB thread!
And - I know what you mean about those winding roads around BWI. _________________ Jack
