Glad you are enjoying the show
Nope, no drops. With the suspension sitting on the steel snubber mount (my lowest position) the main beam is less that 4"' off the ground. I suppose with drop spindles I could jack the suspension up some.
Once I get the suspension set, which I can do anytime now I was going to remove the snubber stop.
I'm in uncharted territory with this and maybe am trying to cheap out by just lowing the suspension with out drops. Are drops the "proper" way to go about it? _________________ Brent

I guess I can go with a set of drops in the future. Supposedly I will have 4" of adjustment with the front adjusters. That means my adjustment will be right in the center with 2" drop spindles if it works the way I think it would.
Right on. So you might be at it sooner than you think. The swing would be nice with short tubes, tuck those tires in nice and tight.
I wanted your centerlines bad when I saw your car for the first time but just didn't have the funds. I had to go wide 5 (I love the look). They certainly aren't as light as a centerline but for the price, well it was a no brainer.
Extreme budget. I like the sounds of that. Edit.. ........ um that means limited doesn't it. _________________ Brent

Drop spindles will give you more suspension travel and move the tire farther back towards the rear of the car. The reason I asked is that today I happened across a 65 chassis, and now I am playing around with going swing axle this time.
I love your rims, wide 5, and together they cost less than one wide 5 centerline.
The next car will be done on a extreme budget. |
I had someone explain the benefits of drop spindles today at the show I was at. It totally makes sense to have them. The lower the car the more vertical the control arms are. This takes away vertical movement and thus taking away suspension travel as you said. It will ride a lot smoother with drops.... I'm glad you brought this up before I welded my adjusters into position. Will be getting a set of drops the next time I get some cash to buy them with. _________________ Brent

Hey Brent,
Also enjoying the "show"!
Be sure to take a close look at the insides of your wheels before getting the drop spindles. Measure and imagine the lower ball joint 2" lower (or whatever the drop is) relative to the inside of the wheel. Some wheels with decent backspacing will place the ball joint right against the wheel with the drops, especially at full droop. Measure first!
FWIW, I ran dropped spindles on a previous VW Beetle project. Because they spaced the wheel outward a little (old style spindles with welded on dropping plates), it pushed the tire too far out towards the fender. I eventually took the dropped spindles off and just lowered it with the adjustable beam. I noticed no significant difference in overall ride comfort either way. In fact, I felt the car drove better & handled better with the std. spindles and lowered beam. I wasn't extremely low though.
Great looking buggy!

Been at it a little more.
I was trying to figure out how I was going to cover everything up then said the heck with it. I have decided to go the "all exposed" route. A lot of this car to me is all about the fab work, so why hide it.
You will be able to see everything yet everything will be concealed in tubes, for example E brake cables, gas line, wiring etc etc.
I will have a small console from the front of the car to the front of the seats but beside the seats it will be exposed.
First off was to try and find out a way of making the E brake handle more presentable.
Then find a way to mount it.
I need to drill the shifter hole bigger yet (where the shifter passes through). Everything is mocked up and not welded yet.
Then the tubes that will hide the E brake cables
I think I am going to add a start button to the car and put it in the hole under the shifter. Just a bit of theft deterrent . Turn the key... nothing happens (Yah I know they can be hot wired in two seconds).
