Just got some Mud-Terrains on my bus!
Any suggestions on a minimum motor setup to get some *okay* highway performance? I'm all stock right now, RGBs, 1500sp and think a boost in performance is in the near future. |

1776. You can run it with a 34 Solex but it will really wake up with Kadrons. 1835 if you can afford it. Both those motors are tried and true Bus motors. Lot of info onhere about how to set them up.
And your Bus looks awesome! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I think some commercial caps would set that thing off! Really love those tires. _________________ 1960 Bus Panel/Camper |

I agree. But only for on-road use. Don't most people take off their jewelry when they are gonna get dirty ? _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Yes they are, you can see the tire size if you zoom in on the photo.
I have the same size tires in the back of my bus and this bus appears to sit a few inches higher from looking at the distance from the fender lip to the wheel. How do you get it higher? I have my spring plates set as close to the stop as I could. |

Yes, 215/75/15's from Tire Rack.
The top picture is the bus 5 minutes before the tire swap, its on 195/75/14's and then after with the 15's. It might not have settled all the way from the tire change but definitely no change to the suspension between the pictures. Suspension is all stock to the best of my knowledge. So far it all fits nice and no rubbing with normal driving just like other posts in this forum. |

215/75R15 Long Trail TA's
Bus has a nice stance now.
I had to let the air out the rears to get them on.

Who would have thought that searching for close to stock 15" A/T tires would be so exhausting but I guess our options keep dwindling (except for our European drivers).
BFGR and Grabber A/T's are a good option but I was hoping to find something in a 195/80/15 (or 195/R-15) to help with clearance issues so I can put on chains if needed and stick close to the stock height. I first came across Nankang F-7's which looked great but are not available in the US in the size I want. After a very long search, I came across these guys:
http://www.onlinetires.com/products/vehicle/tires/...ml#reviews
I'm curious if anyone has tried these tires and if so, what their thoughts are?
They are 27.3" tall and load rated up to 1565lb and they are reasonably priced. Looks like I can get a set of four shipped for about $340. _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

That tire is smaller than stock and provides very poor traction on wet slippery surfaces. I have the 185/r-14 versions on my camper and they perform very poorly in snow and mud. But I have taken them out in the desert and they do ok. Tough 8 ply rated sidewalls help prevent punctures. _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

The Nexen SV820 seems to be a popular choice for everyday use but what about off-road use? The tread seems a little more "all season" than my RAO8's that I have on my 67 Westy which perform very poorly in snow and mud.
Been on the verge to order LT215/75/15 A/T tires many times but I fear that the combination of a big nut tranny on a 59 bus will make it impossible to get them on and off and there won't be any clearance for chains. Right now, I'm running P205/75/15 and I have to deflate the rear tires to get them off and I still have to fight with them.
Someone needs to make an LT195/R15 A/T tire and soon _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

I just realized I never posted a pic of my tires in this thread....
215/75R15 BFG All Terrain KO's. These things ride super nicely.
Disregard the really high nose in the picture, I don't think you can see it, but the rear drivers tire was off the pavement. People kept thinking I was running a bay window beam under it. I made a few people get down on the ground and look when they kept saying I was lying.

Hi,
I have purchased some 15 inch crows feet wheels on prep for 215/75/15 BFG's.
The bus is running a standard big nut box, the motor is a 1200 63 bug, I'm running it for the remainder of the summer to do some shakedown on the bus before I build a 1500 sp motor and fit over winter.
If I put these tyres one will it kill my bus, with running such a small motor? Am I better off running some smaller wheels whilst I've got the 1200?
Cheers James!
