So, is the shell salvageable when something like this happens? _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

Usually not, the heat warps the body panels to the extreme. Rust forms quickly. |

As I understand it a vehicle with that level of fire damage would likely be a category A write off here in the U.K. Means everything has to be destroyed and can never go back on the road- even if you had the skills and cash to fix it. |

Not only can the body panels get warped but the metal changes and becomes weaker. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

I loved y'all rebuild thread, P&V.
If I remember correctly, you had to buy it back from insurance. When you did this, did it render it having a salvage title? _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

That is correct, we had a real battle with the insurance company, they low balled it's value (and I mean really low). Had to get an independent valuer to get it appraised correctly and even then it was a long battle.
The bus now holds a salvaged title and we had to get the usual safety, light and brakes check. _________________ My 1974 Standard Build Thread:

And you can not get full coverage with a salvage, right? _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

Well if you mean the current insurance and with it being a salvage title, then yes, we have full coverage on the Bus. It's insured with American Modern for an agree value of $15,000. _________________ My 1974 Standard Build Thread:

After reading this post I decided to check out my new van - 1979 Single Bay Westfalia w/ 2000cc engine.
WOW - I am so glad I did - because it breaks every rule. I am worried because I am a complete NOOB and this is my first van.
Can anyone help me PLZ?? Here's what I found.
Plastic fuel filter inline **after** the pump in the engine bay
THIS I NEED HELP WITH THIS - WHAT IS IT?
This thing sits after the fuel filter before the line to the single carb- It has two outlets - one which is blocked off.
Here's a look top down
Here's the back of it.
Finally - I see the fuel line entering the bay without a rubber grommet - at least I think that this is the fuel line?
I was thinking that I order a kit from German Supply - but given the set up I was not so sure it would fit?
What steps would you guys recommend I take to make the van safer from spontaneous combustion?
Thanks for any help - I am a complete beginner with little experience - but wish to learn if anyone could be kind enough to point me in the right direction.
Cheers - Daily Oliver |

Don't waste your time or money on Germansupply. Get some Gatesbarricade, new fuel filter and a rubber grommet for any areas where a hose passes threw sheet metal. relocate the filter pre fuel pump and out of the engine bay. _________________ Special Thanks to:

I think your mystery object is a transfer valve usually used with a dual tank system on trucks. In your case it may be being used as a fuel cutoff.
Yes relocate your fuel filter to before the pump. I like metal filters myself, you can probably screw a Ford style filter right into the inlet of your pump. |

I notice that Germansupply quotes 7mm for (1979 Westfalia 2000cc single carb engine) - do you know what the correct size (part # ref) Gatesbarricade to use?
Thanks again for your help.
