Hi people, long time reader first time poster.
I've had this 63 Ragtop for about 7-8 years now, have gone thru and replaced nearly everything on it, and still got lots to do.
I drive it to work rain wind sun, and I like to drive the shit out of it!
It's got a mild 1600 with a 1500 gbox, but otherwise pretty stock.
hoping to take it off the road one day and fix all the rust spot's and bad paint stuff.
cheers Angus

I usually hate one-peice window but they look good on your bug. |

bringing this post back from the dead!
Got myself a crappy jappa daily driver, the bug was just starting to get to the point of WOF(warrant of fittness) failure.
Rust never sleeps okay!
So while she looks good from afar, she was far from good!
This is what the WOF man saw
and what lay beneath

This is the bottom corner of the front screen, must be a heap of bog in there!
this is what is hiding under the rear screen.
plus all the usual problem area's

not that bad, it still doesn't call for a much needed repair,
unless their are holes that could put your feet down the cemented road
good luck |

yeah she's not too bad, just wanted to stop the rust before it got any worst. That's the WOF sticker in the first pic.
A WOF is a legal requirement here in new zealand,we don't have to be insured but the car must be checked by a registered mechanic every 6 months. i use to go to a very "understanding" guy that knows what old cars are like
Couple other issues,
see the holes in the bottom of the firewall
guess this was to spray anti rust stuff inside the sills |

So I started sorting this rust shit out.
Here you can see how wonky the front fenders are
got me some of these.
and did this!
big hole under the horn mount
so many spot welds!

I then removed the bottom of the wheelwell and the washer bottle panel.
no rust holes, but the join's were swelling up here and there.
I'm hoping to reuse the OG metal once the surface is clean.http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc299/sarahandgus/project/ovalfenderwithlight.jpg
I got these rusty old oval fenders of a mate, As well as the old one's off the car I've also got another pair of 60's fronts, which I'm hoping to use to repair the oval fenders with.
they where acid dipped years ago but never painted so they had a nice surface rust thing going on.
And some big hole's
I cleaned them up as best I could and slapped some primer on
and test the fit.
nice centred wheel arch, the old one was always much closer at the front with a huge gap at the back
I know there not "correct" for a 63' but damn I love the shape of these fenders.
This is what I'm shooting for. pshop.

After much hammering and test fitting of fenders and refitting, I still can't get the valance to line up with the front of the fenders
The left is worse than the right as that is the side that had more impact from an accident. Ive got the bumper mount in the right place and both facing the right way, the left was quite twisted.
Is there anyway I can bend this back so the bumper mounts are flatter?
or at least on the same angle?
The more I look the better a clip replacment looks. |

Bought a dead baja off a local guy, It's been well stripped, rolled, bowled and assholed!
not a lot of really useful panels but let's just say it didn't cost much.
swamp thing
The main parts I want off it are the front and rear window frames, as the 63's are both rusty.
These don't look to bad, no holes anyway.

Build looks good, but I can help but notice the scenery! Looks like you have a jungle in your backyard . What part of NZ? _________________ '68 White Bug

yeah it doe's look like a bit of a jungle!
there's a small stream and valley that runs behind our place, slopes away from the back of the garage.Eventhough Auckland is the biggest city in NZ, it's no NY! and we live out in the burbs anyway, one of the older one's so lots of big trees and jungle!
Oh and that's a volcano in that first pic of the dead baja on the trailer, way in the background, just above it's roof. |

Thought I'd do a bit of an update for y'all
Much much thanks to my mate Blair, for lending this beast to me and a spare auto tint helmet.
I'm sure this makes things much easy, not having to flip the screen down all the time.
Blair is an engineer, fixes diggers etc, so this MIG is little baby to him but man it can pack some heat when it's cranked up high! He also gave me some scrap steel to play with, part of which i am using as a workbench so my wooden bench don't catch fire.
practice practice practice!
this is what the left side of the front valance looked like once I got it off, I'm gunna try and resurrect it:wink:
cardboard templates
then some metal from the dead baja
trying to copy the factory details
should all fit back together?
welded up
and dressed down
and the other part of the puzzle
