Is it something that can be fixed easily?

Probably the small gear that drives the numbers. There is a very good post on rebuilding/repairing it, I believe that brass gears are available but I can't recall where. Hate to state the obvious but do a search on speedometers, you should find it.

The guys at Overseas Speedometer took really good care of me. They're in Austin, TX, but the shipping on a speedo is really small. They rebuilt my 73 SB speedo, and odometer, and calibrated both. They even reset my odometer so it'd reflect the right milage on my recently rebuilt engine. They can replace your colored chips for turn signals and idiot lights too.

Their rates were really good, about 75-90 bucks (memory's a little fuzzy). If you give them a call or shoot an email, they'll respond almost the same day. From what I understand, the parts are harder and harder to come by as no one's making them anymore, though I could be off base with that. In one of VW's unfortunate cost cutting measures, they switched from metal to plastic parts in the early 70's ...unless I'm confusing that factoid with the steering gearbox...

[/soapbox]
