PostPosted: Fri Dec 07, 2007 7:04 pm    Post subject: Bedliners Reply with quote

I know there has been a lot of debate on bedliners in these forums. I have read many of the posts on the subject and have decided that its the way i want to go. I have heard about many products Line-X and Rhino Liner seeming to be the leaders in quality. I have done a few searches VIA google and cant seem to find a place that sells one of those products to the general public. I really want to do the work myself on my bug and need to know of a product i can purchase and apply myself that is good for protection and sound deadening purposes. Also, can bedliner products be used on the insed and outside of the engine firwall and in the trunk area? Any help you guys can provide me would be appreciated!

There have been some posts on a good bed liner paint that is sold at Wal-Mart. I can't offhand remember the name. Do not expect any sound deadening qualities from a bed liner, and yes they can be used in the trunk, on the floor pans or in the engine compartment. If you want sound deadening properties that can be painted on, check out the web site for SecondSkin audio.

So... should i POR-15 the pan before applying the bedliner? or do i just need to make sure the metal surface is completly dry, so as to not trap moisture underneath the coating?

i DO NOT recommend Gator Guard .
we used to use it at the state and it peels like a mother after two years or so as well as turning grey.
the bed liner kit from SEM is the deal but it costs 160+ a kit and you need an undercoat sprayer (spraygun) to use it.
for that kinda money i'd POR the shit outta everything instead (or rust bullet etc. )

Im not totally against going with POR-15, ive just heard that people have a hard time with it chipping or flaking up. Also, i was thinking that the bedliner would provide for a bit of sound deadening and if i put a conventional deadening layer on top of the liner that the car would be real quiet.

It is all in the prep, and imho sand blasting is the best prep you can do.

The spray guns are cheap. I used Raptor brand spray on bedliner. I paid $193 for 8- 1 quart bottles and the spray gun, but I did the whole car.

Follow the directions and POR-15 will be there forever. I'm afraid of the fire factor when using bedliner material...That stuff burns real fast and hot.

I personally like Herculiner which I buy at Pep Boys. 1 kit is enough to do top and bottom (several coats). I have used the Duplicolor product and while the spray was convienent, it didn't have the hardness of the Herculiner product.

Well, this being my first pan-job... It went well and seems to be holding up well on the parts that I properly prepped. There were a couple of spots that I figured would be problems later and they are. The bedliner doesn't stick to a slick surface very well, but everywhere else it seems fine.

I got a good deal on a gallon of the Duplicolor bedliner and brushed it on with a paintbrush. I found out later that there is a spray-kit available for it, that woulda been nice. I spread the stuff on real thick and in places 2 or 3 coats, top and bottom, and still had about 1/3 of the can left.

On my next pan, I'm gonna go Por15 or something similar. I like the way I did it this time, no regrets because of my time and budget, it worked out great, I'd just like to go a little nicer next time.

also sprayed under the fenders, running boards, under the rear parcel shelf, under the deck lid, gas tank, DTM shroud on my old type I.
It's pretty thick in most places to help sound damping...

If your looking for rust protection and sound deadening go with:
POR-15
Herculiner

The 4x4 and Offroad guys use it for a reason.
It's dusty but this is the back of my jeep with the rear seat removed:

I applied 1 thin coat when it was still tacky I applied a 2nd thick coat.
The brush works best.

Here's the inside of the front:

bare metal.. etch primer.. sealer.. then 3m body shotz.. $15/pint.. can do the pan for about $75 in materials.

As far as I know it's really the only widely available product line that's easy to get pro results with.

someone mentioned the Raptor liner kit earlier in the posts, this stuff is great!! The way I had the best results is having thr parts sandblasted, then using a good etch primer, then spray the Raptor liner on both sides. This is a two part system(has a hardner) that is very resistant to chemicals, (gas oil brake fluid) and when done correctly 100% water proof. Two coats and its a tad thicker than a credit card. The kits are around $100. You can spray it roll it brush it to get different textures, I like spraing it. When its spayed it has smooth bumps, not gritty type bumps. This makes it easier to keep clean because it dosent have any crevices to hold dirt. Its also tintable, so you can make it any color you want. It made by U-Pol and should be sold at most paint stores that carry U-Pol products.
