Do you have the brake shoes turned all the way out so they lock up the drums? You can't bleed all the air out of the lines unless you do.

Once you have all the shoes adjusted out against the drums, ensure all the bleeders are fully closed, all the brake line fittings are properly tightened, and the reserviour is topped off with fluid. Next, start at the front left wheel cylinder and bleed it until no more bubbles come out. From there go to the right front, then left rear, and finish at the right rear. Make sure while you're bleeding that the fluid level in the reserviour never drops to where the master starts sucking air. After all the wheel cylinders are bled, readjust the brake shoes away from the drums so they provide a very slight drag on the drum.

If you still don't get any fluid to come out of the rear cylinders after thoroughly bleeding the fronts, then you either have a line blockage, or if you've installed a dual circuit master then the rear circuit piston isn't working properly (probably a blocked compensating port).

Then you might need to bench bleed the MC.

Since it is in the VW now, have a helper push down on the pedal while you have the front farthest from MC bleeder open. Then close the bleeder and have the helper let up on the pedal. Repeat 20 times or till you get brake fluid coming out.

Once the above is working and bled, repeat the above on the rear axle bleeder farthest from the MC.

Do not be afraid of double check that the shoes might need more adjusting into the drums.

If still no joy, it might be you just have a bad new MC.

Single or dual MC?

How are you bleeding the system?

Guessing you mean " starting with right rear".

Are you getting a good amount of brake fluid out of each bleeder?

Drop to the floor on a drive maybe? If so, sounds like a bad MC. Take it apart and inspect.

Otherwise it sounds like you have a joyriding pedal....

Do you think both MCs were made on the same assembly line? Then someone there could have made the same mistake on two or more MCs.

I'm having a tough time getting firm pedal on the 66. It already had disks on the front, I replace the MC with a dual unit because I also put rear disks on the car. I bench bled the new MC, installed it, hooked up all the lines and did a series of bleeding, gravity, vacuum, and the old pump pump bleed thing. I have brakes, but the pedal goes down more than half before any action on the brakes.

More bleeding?

Air in the system will result in pedal getting higher and higher the more times you pump it. Then when you let off the pedal for more than a few seconds, the pedal the next time you push down on it, will be again be at same low spot. Plus the pedal will have a squishy feel to it.

With properly bled brake system you should notice the slightest increase between the first and second pump, but after that should be same height pedal. Slight change is due to the flex lines swelling a tiny amount with the increased pressure inside. Pedal will have a rock hard feel to it.

Which of the above describes your situation?
