I guess someone let him know it was a smog pump for a water cooled ?
Hopefully, no one actually bought it and that's why it was deleted !

Makes me wonder where this US Serviceman that was stationed in Germany in the 50's, that bought this, is now...... _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )

The add was very short lived because I got an email right away saying it was a smog pump, I was listing this for a friend of mine and that's this info he gave me. I did a patent search for #3275225 and this is what I came up with.
http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.piw?docid=US003275225&am...PN/3275225
So it is a Roots style blower but is it still a smog pump? |

OK...fair enough. Does your friend know the serviceman from the 1950's that brought it back from Germany? _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )

He does not know the service man but the guy he got it from has had it since 1960. Based on the patent info do you agree he is right or should we still question what it is?

No info or pics come up for me on the link you sent me.
There is no doubt as to what it is, its a smog pump, but they were not around in 1960. So I would keep questioning, particularly if he paid alot of money for it beleiving it was a supercharger. _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )

I think he traded some stuff for it years ago.
The link was only vuable with Qucktime viewer.
Here is the website http://patimg1.uspto.gov/ You will need to do a little searching. The patent # is 3275225 |

The patent was issued applied for April 6th, 1964 and was granted Sept. 26th, 1966. I didn't think they were too worried about smog in 1964?
If you read the patent, it talks about it:
"This invention relates to improved apparatus for compressing fluids and particularly compressible fluids such as air. More particularly, the invention relates to an improved compressor of the lobed-rotor type, frequently called a "Roots" blower or compressor after an early patentee of the configuration."

A smog pump in its basic form is nothing more than an air pump. In this case VW used a roots style pump for a smog pump. What you have there is NOT a supercharger _________________ 1957 Karmann Ghia

The image from the patent is titled 'Fluid Compressor'. who says it's for a vw? with the correct materials, I could be pumping nuclear waste. _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

Even if that's the patent for it, roots pump doesn't mean it'll be automatically it's a supercharger neither. A roots pump is a type of pump (twin screw), not a type of supercharger; some supercharger do uses roots, but so do other pumps. It'll be like saying all electrical pumps are for fuel pumps... |

There are some interesting points being made here and very valid ones. The bottom line is do we say it is a smog pump our a blower. Both the top and bottom look like they would bolt up to a manifold and carb. Is it a coincidence that a smog pump would have those similar fittings?
I think I will see if someone here in Chico, CA has an early carb and manifold. |

those things surface every month or so and we have the same conversation. Can anyone identify what water pumper that thing came from? _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

There was an article in an older issue of Volksworld Magazine.
I believe it gave the part # and the application.
I have the issue, but can't remember which one.
I'll post a scan when I find it.
But rest assured, it is a water pumper smog pump !
