So I found out that I'm running a bosch 009 instead of a vacuum advance and that's not good.

I'm leaning toward buying this: http://www.hot-spark.com/Hot-Spark-SVDA-034-BOS4V1.htm

Especially since it's got a magnetic pickup. Unfortunately they're outta stock, just wonderin if there's anywhere else I can get these or I just have to wait. Also if there's any other distributors you'd recommend, please do tell Laughing

I'd go for the Bosch part.

Just look at the o-ring. It's a round off the shelf part and not the correct one.

I've installed them on a number of customer's engines.

All ran better than with a 009 and there's been no problems.

Hmm, I think I'm gonna go with the hotspark one, since it's around the same price and has the magnetic pickup. Guess I'll just have to wait Crying or Very sad

The "Hot Spark" is cheap for a reason.

It seems hardly a day goes by that you catch one of these

"009 is a pile of steaming crap" stories, but I like to play devils advocate because as with most and this ones a classic... Gives no information on the car or application and believing that this SVDA or equivalent is going to help you is utter folly...What are you running???

True the 009 was sold for years as a replacement for all applications VW and this is WRONG.... But to believe another distributor is going to cure all the problems is just as WRONG.....

I know there are people here that sell and repair certain types of used Bosch distributors found on old busses and they swear these fix alot of the problems, but wouldnt common sense tell you there is no magic one size fits all answer?

The absolute best would be to buy a Mallery with adjustable advance and tailor this to your specific application using a dyno and exhaust gas analyzer...

There are also people making a handsome profit from selling SVDA replacements, they have a slick sales speech to wow you ....... Funny but the same people bad mouthing the 009s especially the younger more gullible newbies have no idea as to proper maintenance or that they take a special grease not the damn wheel bearing grease most hacks slather on either...

This information will be lost like a fart in the wind so you easy marks keep buying what the sellers are selling, your eyes are getting very very heavy, duh...... Oh God I've broken ranks and I'm not spouting the party line SVDA,SVDA,SVDA,SVDA,SVDA.... Smile Smile Surprised Laughing Laughing Laughing

hehehe, thank you my friend the devil's advocate i must say I enjoyed your little speech
Do you mean the grease you put on the lobes? cuz I got special grease for that.

Anyway though I'm pretty experienced with carburetors engines and ignition and I've tinkered around with it quite a bit and can't get it to run just the way I want it, given it a tuneup, etc etc. so I'm gonna give this a shot, there's gotta be somethin to all those rumors eh?

I'm just runnin' a stock 1600cc motor, stock carb 34pict i think its called? Laughing

Jim-

Are you talking about anyone I might know? Rolling Eyes

There is no "one size fits all" even though for 30+ years the 009 was sold as such.

In some applications a vacuum/mechanical works better than a mechanical only. And not all vacuum/mechanical are the same, some work better than others. The same can be said for mechanical only.

And I agree that anyone who says "Get a SVDA" without knowing the specifics is foolish. Because there are many cabs that simply don't have vacuum ports so that negates the use of a vacuum distributor.

I personally have tried a number of different combos and in some cases found a vacuum/mechanical was a better solution than a mechanical only. I've also found the opposite that in some the mechanic is better. As I stated before that using the same 1973 stock 1600DP I found using a Solex H30/31PICT with a Bosch 019, a mechanical distributor "found on old busses", worked best. But using the exact same engine and changing the carb to a Solex 34PICT-3 a Bosch 0 231 170 034, commonly called a SVDA, worked best.

The same engine with different carbs required 2 different distributors.

You always need to match the distributor to the carb and general engine specs.

I'm glad you said something as my intent was to coax you into responding so as offer a more complete response ..

For those of you wanting to do it right no matter what you run ask for this part number Bosch 5700-002-005 it comes in a 45ml tube which would last an individual a lifetime...

Are you sure about that? Wink

I just started my 4th tube.

I like using it on the pilot bearing in the gland nut for the tranny input shaft.

ok you've lived four lifetimes already Very Happy Never used it on anything but the point rubbing block here .... but

For those that have never seen this the Bosch grease is a heavy fiber old fashioned grease kinda like the wheel bearing grease before the 1980s... The heavy fiber grease stays where you put it unlike the creamy red stuff marketed under a variety of names .......Hmmm I've been greasing my nuts with the red stuff I bought at Walmart Very Happy Uh gland nuts that is............

Bosch makes a new version of the 034 (SVDA) in Mexico. CB Performance has the best price.
