Keeping this alive.
Anyone have an update, pics, etc....
I also have a 67 deluxe sea blue/cumulus white with aero papyrus/steel interior.
I'm in for a complete interior plus a little extra if/when it becomes available.
Any updates????? _________________ I like VWs |

I have updates but am waayyyy late in getting them posted. I was trying to freshen the interior of my 67 21 window bus and picked up 2 67 deluxe (13 windows) and was fortunate enough to swap my interior panels for some slightly nicer ones.
I did need new seat covers and some extra vinyl so after lots of research I settled on the TMI Y324 Como green vinyl with the off white basketweave seating surface. Its as close of a match as I have seen to the original aero papyrus. The como green is a little bit greener than the original material but the original material is 45 yrs old and a little faded so hard to say what it looked like new. All things considered the Y324 and Off White basketweave are about as close as you can get.
I will get some pics up this weekend, I ordered the seat covers, vinyl, and a new ragtop cover from Jbugs and they arrived in June as I was in final prep for a move from Wichita to Seattle. I got the bus back from the upholstery shop the day before the car carrier arrived to pick it up. _________________ 67 Bug, Hot VWs feature car

Just went down and shot some pics in the garage. Pretty crappy pictures (it looks much better in the daylight) but here it is... The sidewall and door panels are original (but faded). The walk thru panels are original but the lower strip has been replaced with the new vinyl.

That blue looks like mid-'60's Chevy upholstery.
Gobs of this fabric is available.

Ok, I may be the only one interested in this but the samples I got are not close. Those Madrid ones are way to blue. So this had me drive around to some shops and I did find a Blue that is very close. My Interior is faded so it leans more towards a green. I found some that has some
turquoise in it that is close enough. I am thinking of just making new panels and putting the original away so this is close enough since all the original will be in the basement.
The next question is where to find the White sections? Each place I went to did not have anything close to the texture. They had plenty of whites but none with the ridges like the original. Does TMI carry a close enough white that I could use with my new Vinyl? _________________ My 66 Deluxe Build

I pulled the old seat covers off my restoration project a couple weeks ago and was amazed to find the original covers underneath. Heavily discolored but not ripped or anything. I also found the original interior panels underneath some new upholstery someone covered them with. What amazed me the most was when I removed one of the snap ins on the interior panel I could see the difference between faded aero papyrus and non-faded (underneath the round snap in) Wow! The original blue is much MUCH darker then what you generally see, not nearly as teal/turquoise in color. _________________ "Safety-Glass" is not all that safe!! I went ahead and started with what I found. I asked around and the Aero ridged vinyl is not available but could be made for @100 a yard. Seeing as I did not want to pay that much I looked for another option. I figured if I could find something close I would pull all the original and roll with the new.
After going all over I did find some off white vinyl at Hancock in their scrap pile for $5.00 a yard. So I drove to two different ones to find enough to recover the panels and all the seats. It is more of a basketweave material but it looks "vintage" enough for me and once the other was pulled it looks pretty good in my opinion.
All swapped out with original seats still up front.Ran out of clips for the passenger door so need to order those so it will stop flopping around.

Thanks

It's a blue rubber that matches the color of the floor mats, but with a finer ribbing.
Wow, I need to get down there and do some cleaning _________________ Jack Stenner

Very nice. I think it looks way better than some of the '50s/'60s aqua looking stuff some folks have used.
Also what kind of board did you use for the panels? _________________ Wanted for '66 deluxe- AeroPapyrus/Steel front door panels and kick panels

Thanks for posting the bottom rubber Jack.
Thanks. I am happy with it. I think once the seats are done it will look ok.
I used 1/8 inch Masonite (I think, maybe an ecoboard type) press board. Very similar to original material. _________________ My 66 Deluxe Build

Has there been any more headway on getting some closer matching materials? Here is what my recent search turned up.
Of course the lighting changes on how the colors look and only having a small sample never gives a real true image how it will turn out on seats or panels. Yes the samples changed sides in the pictures. |
