OK...I've made the leap, but in a slightly different direction. Since I'm using all OG panels. I decided I wasn't interested in matching the original color. I wanted to match my seats to the color that aero papyrus FADES to...that funky green (no...not yours Gerson). I've selected a vinyl made by Esprit™...teal (PEF 067) and alabaster white (PEF 003):

Just got the seats back and in my opinion they're freakin' perfect. Everybody is trying to replicate the original aero papyrus, which is fine if you're doing an all repro interior, but THIS is matching what aero papyrus fades to for those who want to use OG panels, but need new seat covers. Hey...the panels hold up MUCH better after 50+ years, but the seats, especially the fronts almost always are shot. Seems that the aero papyrus material VW used was fragile anyway:

Would you please provide how much material was used and if you don't mind the approximate cost to do it? Is that vinyl easily sourced by most upholstery companies?
Looks great!!! |

Very comfy. The springs were in good shape, and I gave the shop brand new horsehair pads I ordered from WW. The pads were excellent...the upholsterer even mentioned that. I'm VERY pleased. I like the color better than what West Coast was selling, because his try to replicate NEW aero papyrus. His front seat covers are $750. My shop charged me $890 for the custom work installed. I would have paid them to do the install anyway so the price would have been the same whether going with pre made covers or going this way. This way I got to match up to my faded OG panels. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

My receipt says 1.5 of the teal and 2 of the alabaster. $95 parts and $795 labor for a total of $890. I provided WW horsehair pads which cost me $150. The stuff should be easily gotten by any shop. The company is Esprit. The colors are alabaster (PEF 003), and Teal (PEF 067). _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

He said the middle seat (full length correct '67 seat) would be less because it's three surfaces instead of four. I hate taking the middle seat I have apart for recovering, because somebody would kill for it as it is...a very nice aero baleric for a Lotus White bus, so I'm waiting and have put a swap ad in the classifieds. Can't wait forever though. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

If you are careful you can remove the cover w/o any damage for someone else to re-use. _________________ WANTED:

Got a roll of each in for my 67 Aero Papyrus interior- pretty dead on match! Seat covers will be done in a couple of weeks, stay tuned.

Ooooh, I'm liking the rectilinear pattern on the white material. Should make it look much more like OG. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Blue = ESS1714 ENDURASOFT II SIERRA MET LT BLUE
from Miami Corportation
Textured White = 6971L Bedford White
from Acme Headliner Co. in Long Beach
Sent the material to Sewfine and they stitched it up. No heat seams and the white is a bit thin and not as stretchy, but very happy overall.

Ken's matches the fadded color very well. It would be equivalent to ESS2929 ENDURASOFT II SIERRA MET LT TURQUOISE. I matched mine to the non-fadded color found on the backside of my OG panels. It is a very close match and is lighter and more metallic than it appears in these darker images. Bottom line, settle on something your happy with, as very few people will agree on a "perfect match" for this combo. _________________ MonkeyNut VW - www.monkeynutvw.com

Yep ,,was just saying his matches what faded would look like..Which is what I am after also.
Yours look very nice as well.
Hardly a good spot on any of my OG materiel that wasn't faded,dried,crispy..etc
Getting tired of looking at my white covers I did 12 or so years ago..the drivers bottom is well worn & holy so must be about time I step it up!
Thanks to all you guys who put in the time and effort on the research _________________ 1959 mango-trailerbus

I think the real key is finding a white vinyl with the proper ribbed pattern. This is a close as I have found, but not exact. It is also headliner material, so it is not as stretchy as I would like. If it could be heat seamed with a stretchy backing, I think it would be even better. All in all though, very happy with it. _________________ MonkeyNut VW - www.monkeynutvw.com

I thought I would try to keep this alive for all of us Aero Papyrus geeks. I'm searching, as many others have done, for as close to OG as possible. Probably the closest of seen so far are the photos posted by Kate on Page 1 of this thread, however those were from 2007. I'm planning on reaching out to some auto fabrics companies, so any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
OG Door panel material:
OG Door Panel Material (left) vs. OG seat material (right). On mine it looks like the seat material does not have the grey stripe painted in between the seams, as the door panel does...but the seat material is so dirty I can't tell for sure. Can anyone confirm this?
Faded OG blue (left) vs. unfaded OG blue (middle and right)
Unfaded OG Blue Close-up
I had this kick panel done in WCCR's blue, so you can see the difference between the OG, unfaded blue and theirs. Theirs is a very nice color but in my opinion it's too blue/too dark.
