Repair of 61 standard rear corners

So it begins another project. This bus has had its rear corners removed by the previous owner after it was hit hard in the rear. I would like to share my progress as it comes along let me know what you think this is day one and not much got done.

The bus was hit hard enough that it bowed both qtr panels just infront of the rear fresh air vents its difficult to see in the pictures. Time will show more of the extent of the damage.

Damn, I've never seen anyone trim the corners like that...good luck with your project, looks like you'll need it.

That bus body must have been whacked pretty hard to cause that much damage. It looks like you will be getting complete corner panels. He hacked it so he could drive it but, unfortunately, he cut off the bottom of the rear pillars. Good luck with it.

you need to at least look for both rear quarter sections from the beltline down and up to the vent setions on the sides. look for some og donar metal. looks like the cut the engine surround metal too. that section is also spoted on, as is the inner luggage area metal that looks bent. if you can weld, take your time and line everything up right. from what i can see in the pics you posted it looks like a good project otherwise.

Yes I have a 62 for a doner I am planning on cutting from the belt line down on the driver side and the whole corner to the roof on the passenger side. The 62 has the engine compartment metal that I need I will post some more pictures after the weekend. Cut weld repeat is going to be the plan.

Sheesh. That may be the spazziest looking rear end I've ever seen. It's strange how that got bent like that inside. Keep up the progress reports. The picture of the girl is just plain wrong. I hope I don't have a nightmare tonight.

I picked up the parts bus today and did some more work on the standard

It was a bit tricky but I got it loaded with no wheels

The belt line by the rear hatch was bent in 1 inch on both sides and the rear hatch was bowed like a taco. I used a 4 ton porta power and some wood blocks and pushed it back to a respectible shape.

The rear corners will work out well I may change the passenger side qtr

The floor above the engine turned out well and the passenger qtr inner and outer are turning out well

A few last pushes and the rear hatch is alighned with the opening of the bus. Tonight myself and chase were able to take off the driver side corner and begin preping the sheet metal to test fit the new corner. I still havent decided to put on the whole passenger qtr or to splice it in what do you think?

I also took out the inner braceing on the driver side the new one will be a lot better than trying to fix the bent up old one.

A lot of effort and work. It looks like you were able to get the tweak out of the passenger inner too. Is it warm inside your work area? Keep it up.

port-a-power,push the inner damage out,then look at it again,or take it to someone who knows how to repair damage,look for the oldest guy in a bodyshop,they used to fix alot more cars than just cut and paste,best of luck
