Brian, the white Bus was at B&R Buggies for a while. Gary was doing some engine work on in. Owner must have had stock in Alcoa, cuz everything was aluminum. Even a full custom off-road style dash. I think it was a Chevy engine?

PostPosted: Sat Oct 25, 2014 12:27 pm    Post subject: From Germany with no facts Reply with quote

Hey all you Baywindow Driver..

i located in the west of germany.
A while ago i have my 77 Bay restored to the specifications which was always seen on meetings, lower..............
But now a few Years later i will do more trips with my little son. Funny Thing is he is not really a fan from all the great meetings such Spa Bug Show and other.
But he ask me more and more to do trips in to the wilderness and go camping, to mountains ....
Means our Bus needs a little upgrade. First we had the idea to sale the "BODO" and buy a Syncro T3 Vanagon. But these are in the meanwhile much to expensive here in germany, if ou need this in camper specifications. And by the way our son was crying if he heard that our Bus should sale to another person Smile
So the idea, we lift our bus and now we are searching for information, because here in germany nobody does lift a T2 up everbody drop it down lower and lower and lower.. not so good for driving dirt tracks in the wilderness
Are the following facts are right ? we need:
1. Raised one outer spline in the rear / Did we need other CV or longer Driveshafts like the bus from "newboy113" ? ( the red one )
2. adjusters welded in the front beam / In which position ?
3. Gas Shocks / Which manufacture did you use ?
4. has anybody pics of his raised bus from under the car ? this would be very helpful to see details of the Adjusters ...
We are thankful for all helps and information

Withe best regards from germany and sorry for our bad explanations and bad english

Maarten

You really don't need to do much if you just want to do some light off-road driving (dirt roads, shallow mud, etc).

This is my friend Jason's bus. It's totally stock suspension, CV's, axles, etc. He is just running the cheap EMPI coilover shocks on the front to pick the nose up a bit.

He's running VW Jetta 15" steel wheels and General Grabber tires (215/75 I think).

It is a good look, cheap, and does well in light off-roading.

It will depend on how much you would like to lift your bus.

1. index the rear by a small amount, you can use Type 4 CVS on your Type 2 Axles.
2. Welded adjusters are adjustable, so play with them
3. KYB or billestein

It is cheaper to buy complete axle assemblies than individual CVs. But I was just reading too, as expected, bus axles are longer by a good amount than 944/181 axles. So, T4 on bus axles. But if there is too much lift, I think you can use axles meant for bugs using 3x3 arms. Those axles have a length of 19 and a 1/4. They all have the same amount of splines, so CVs are interchangeable (unless they're 930s)

It's always cheaper to buy complete axles.

I figured I would go buy thing axles and then just swap everything to the bus axle shafts. If needed, I would go get longer axle shafts but I doubt it. I just want a slight lift with suspension and then a slight lift with tires, nothing crazy.

so if im rightly understanding this, if i buy this linked axles, the joints should fit on my stock axles, and fit into my bus and give my the extra angle possibility? right?

In that picture we're actually running front tyres that are too small. You can see that the ones in the back are larger, which makes the nose dip down somewhat.

We had the larger tyre lock up in the wheel well (on landing from a huge jump) and bend the entire front suspension. We had to fit a smaller tyre to fix the problem with the tyre rub.

On our last trip the front suspension leafs snapped again. So we're now probably going to ditch our bull bar with spare tyre setup. We want to switch to a lightbar setup like Kirk has. Really like the look of it! Probably going to stow the spare tyre on the roof where the spare fuel tanks are now. This will significantly reduce the weight that is dangling in front of the front axle.

First step is to fabricate spare fuel tanks which can fit on either side of the frame rails so we free up some space on the roof.

We're actually thinking about that as well. We are now running into the problem that the alternator can hardly cope with nighttime driving with all the lights on. So we're considering swapping the headlights out for full LED units (GE Nighthawk), also might fit lightbars from Lazer.

http://www.lazerlamps.com/

So not entirely sure on what we'll do yet. But first thing is we need to ditch the halogen, both the headlights and the two halogen lightforce units we have.

Might move the HID lightforce units to the bumper and fit one or two LED bars to the roof. But first need to do some photoshopping to get an idea of how it will look. Could also keep the lights on the roof and install a bar on the bumper.

I checked out the GE Nighthawks http://www.gelighting.com/LightingWeb/na/consumer/.../overview/
And they look just like TruckLite LED headlights.

Your thoughts on this...
At first I was trying to decide between the TruckLite headlights and the JW Speaker headlights. Now I see there's GE nighthawks and I don't know which to choose for my bus.

$270 for headlights? Nope.
