I've asked this about a thousand times, but one more won't hurt:
What is the maximum diameter tire that I can stuff into the wheel wells, maintaining full travel, and without rubbing? I'm willing to change wheel size from the hard to find 14", but I insist on the C Rated (or equivalent) tires. Less interested in off road than max diameter for best ratio change. What is max diameter?

I'm running 215 70R16 Yokohama Geolandars. The tire is 28" in diameter and mounted on a 7" wide rim with 5/8" spacers from T3 technique. I get a slight rub, but only when turning and at full bump. I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but ANYTHING smaller than that will fit without rubbing. In fact, My rub is so slight that I can't even tell WHERE it's rubbing. I don't actually see any evidence of rubbed off paint... yet _________________ a Black & Blue Su-BUS-aroo

235/75-15 is what I think will work well with stock _________________ Wash your hands

Im running Wagonwest lift spindles and rear plates on my bus and I Couldn't squeeze 235's on. Rubbed out massively on the front on the doglegs and just rubbed on the rear arches. Obviously it deends on wheel off set. But the wagonwest kit does widen the track about 20mm on each corner. I'm currently running 215 75 15 BFG AT's and just getting away with a little rub on the front every now and then. Need more lift!! |

I have the 215s on a saggy front beam, no lift and I have 0 rub. I'm using some 66/67 beetle wheels though. I have some 0 offset wheels coming though, so lets see how that works out
But yea, up front I would love to see some 7-15s used. That would make for some fuel efficient buses. Even stock. _________________ Wash your hands

It's the closes 'worked solution' yet. I'm willing to go up to 15" for a better select of tires, but I'm looking for the best on-road tire of the largest diameter that will fit. So far the best I've been able to generalize is to keep the total diameter under 28" regardless of the wheel size.

Has anyone found a source for new rear torsion tubes or experience in increased spring rate performance? After raising it three notches the a few trips off road and a week of camping has got the rear almost back to where I started. This bus started out as a westy but came with the smaller bars for whatever reason and after 40 years they don't have much spring left. I would like to try the larger factory bars but figure any I find at the wrecker have as much use as the ones I'm using now. _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Pretty sure the Bentley manual descriptions of which diameter bars went into which bus have been disproven many times over. Just gotta look at the bars themselves, not the bus from which they came. _________________ nothing |

I believe that. I'd still look into swayaway though. They make bug bars, and early bus bars. not sure about newer buses though. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for someone to engineer. _________________ Wash your hands

They might work. But I think more than likely it will. _________________ Wash your hands
