Nope. It just appeared to me to be stretching the diaphram too much. Maybe it was my lever. I reused the old one as the replacement seemed cheaply made. I was getting about 7 psi after rebuild. More gaskets got me down to 2.2 psi. |

Just a quick update on a couple of details completed this weekend on the block. I've pulled the galley-way plugs and cleaned the drillings of age old gunk. Then instead of plugging them up with the same plugs, I've tapped in a tapered thread and inserted NPT grub screws to close off the holes.
All the holes have been done in this manner except the one adjacent #4 bearing which has a flow restrictor taper. It's in the shot above and is the one that isn't plugged. I've yet to turn that up on the lathe.
During the week I've managed to put the jack back together after a proper clean-up and repaint. I'll stick it in the trunk for safe keeping.

Nice to hear that John. There really is a Santa Claus! So if you speak to Santa, (in spanish I understand) let him know I'm looking forward to it but there is no rush. The engine is first then comes the goodies. I want Santa to take his time and do a good job.. no pressure.

Neither can I Scott! BTW I'm looking forward to seeing yours on the road just as much... but for me that means jumping over the Pacific. So are you saying you have plans to visit Sydney when I finish?
Anyway... Just to show you all more than nothing has been going on of late, I've been working in the back in preparation for the engine to go inside. The oil bath filter is cleaned up and mounted. It wasn't repainted, just washed down and given a good cleaning. Wiring has been run to the locations that need it, though some crimp connectors are yet to be done. The German trunk liner has been used to cover the engine bay. I got it from Jerry Heldt over in WA ( West Australia not Washington State). It was easy to manage in the flat sections but hard to deal with in the curved sections. I used a heat gun to soften it and get some bonding with the paint over the wheel wells. The result was OK but I couldn't avoid a few wrinkles. I figured this might be an authentic look because the guy in the factory would have had far less time to to get it perfect looking and many got left that way. Well I tried my best and this is looking OK to me.
Enjoy

That's looking very impressive Nicholas. It'll be great to see it on the road.
What's that red strip just under the top lip of your engine bay opening ? |

LED Brake light. It shines through the decklid vents and alerts snoozing drivers behind me that my four wheel disk brakes are abruptly altering my velocity and they had better start using theirs least there be an almighty collision and a very grumpy me shouting all sorts of abuse at them.
Simple measure to avoid the worst Better hurry up and finish the motor so I can put myself and the car at risk from those sleepers behind me

OK so I'm getting bored mucking around with engines and need something a little more organic. How about playing with some wood?
We cleaned up the original 48 year old piece and glued it back with epoxy. It was left to dribble into the cracks to make a great seal. The excess can be sanded back to the correct profile and then the whole thing can be coated with epoxy sealer.
I purchased a reproduction wooden bow very early in the programme and at the time it looked like the right thing to do. They are hard to get these days. I was expecting the original bow to be rotted out after all these years but I suppose that is one of the benefits of getting a car from the desert states. Not only rust free but also wood rot free. The original bow was only split where the glue had dried out and thus was a prime candidate to be restored. It would be a prefect fit on the original frame and original body.
Comparing the reproduction bow there are so many differences in the routing that would complicate its use. Much simpler to reuse the original bow especially since we've made it scrub up so nicely.
Also, in the post this week arrived the buffers for the cabriolet top made by Garry at Brezelwerks. They're exact!!

I had time this weekend to work on some important things on the motor. I got lots of Help from Boris at Vintage Vee Dub and Dave Birchall who took over the drinks supply and general assembly. It was a fun afternoon at Campsie.
Despite the amber lubrication we managed to get the PICT30-1 Carburettor assembled with a new kit in it. This one is original to the car and still has its part number tag on it. 141-129-123-0. It was cleaned out thoroughly with the water blaster to get the almost new look. The fuel hose clamp is held in with a stainless safety wire to prevent the brass tube press fitted into the body wiggling out, causing a fuel spill and subsequent fire. Just thinking ahead. Dave is a retired Jet engine Mechanic and Vice pres. of Club Vee Dub. It was his idea.
The original rockers were replaced with ones proving a little more valve clearance. I'm interested to have a little more fuel and exhaust ventilation on account of the Shorrock I have planned for this engine.
This is the rockers set ready to go in
Here it is bolted in and about to be sprayed with a protective dose of ACF50 along with the head which has already been given a fresh set of valves and springs along with all the important surfaces re-faced
For the moment everything is soaked in ACF50 so I've put everything back in plastic bags to keep an air tight seal and in cardboard boxes. The next stage is coming soon.... the bottom end.
Looking forward to that!

Sensational work Nicholas !. Your attention to detail on this project is fantastic. You could just about publish a book .... "How to Restore a Karmann Ghia .... The Right Way". This will be one very very special motor vehicle. |
