Well the trailing arms have now been seam welded with TIG and the shock canisters re-welded with TIG to make everything solid as a rock.
Big buggy day planned today - going to try and do the pan reinforcing along the edges of the pan floor and build the structure around the nose of the transmission where I had to chop out the torsion bar. _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

Trailing arms, double spring plates and caps now sandblasted, POR'd in gloss black. Now bearings, seals and disk brake caliper brackets sourced, as well as new rubbers. Also got some type 2 stub axles so I can fit larger CV's.
As soon as the POR cures I'll get allt his back together and get a rolling pan. Gotta move house over the next few weeks so hopefully can get the garage set up the way I like it - so I can actually get to my Manx and work on it. Taking an hour to move engines, transmissions and parts outta the way just to work on it every time really hurts the motivation. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Good to hear that you're still finding time to work on it. Good luck with the move. That is always tiring ..... |

Haven't done any work on it since I moved. Gearboxes going out to customers every week.
I decided that the pan isn't really good enough to take all that 4WD power so discussed the idea of getting a Manx Chassis modified for it with D.B. in the USA.
Unfortunately he is worried that I am just going to rip his design off. A real shame as I had hoped that he would be able to use the modifications/jigs to set up for his USA customers. Oh well....
Am currently looking at getting a new shortened VW pan built with the appropriate reinforcing and roll cage by someone in Australia. Still deciding on the details.
I will likely just get a 2WD turbo version going and finished (driving & licensed) first and then move to the 4WD version.
Having now seen how good the 2WD 5 speed turbo buggies are - particularly with an LSD installed, it's almost unnecessary to go the extra step of 4WD. It was/is really just to prove it can be done. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

I do have one question for you.
What sort of gearbox (at the tail end) would one need to install a mid engine w/4WD? I was thinking something like a boat V-drive. Any ideas? |

A boat V drive is really rear engined. The motor sits in the boat with its flywheel forward and the power take off is from that.
The vedt combo i can think of for mid engine 4wd is Mitsubishi Lancer GSR or any of the multiple fwd with 4wd setup cars.
Install the motor and gearbox at the vack of the car lingitudinally and gave the tailshaft through the middle to the front diff. _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

Gday all. if you are talking mid engine the 720 nissan 4wd's use a nice independant transfer box as do the early suzuki's but theirs is under driven in lj 50 in the lj 80 I dont know. The 720 is the stronger of the 2 they both use a small tailshaft to connect to the transmission so just the matter of front yoke to suit your application

Well, new year - New Year's Resolution : get some progress!!
With the Subarugears business taking all of my time up, I finally succumbed and admitted that I cannot finish my WRmanX on my own.
When I closely inspected the old swingaxle pan the floors were in poor shape and it really wasn't a top quality product.
So I have enlisted the help of Paul over at Steelart to help me get this project into reality.
Paul has sourced a late model Ball Joint IRS pan for me and removed the floors. It's been cut, sandblasted and the tunnel welded together again.
Already put new handbrake and thottle cable tube in, plus bolted in the Subarugears Subamount to hold the Subaru engine and 5 speed trans in place : (although it will use the lower bolt hole for my trans setup).
Next I'm shipping the Manx body and vented sidepods to him to do all the barwork and exoskeleton. Then the modifications for the front differential and 4WD transmission will be done to this tunnel. _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

Sorry Sean, life and business can get in the way sometimes. And yours is on the road! I really have been too slow, considering I did all the difficult engineering work a few years ago. I was over late last year for a week, should have gone for a cruise in your buggy - will organise that next trip! _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

Todd, I've subscribed as I've just gone through this from the start and it has been an engineering feat!!
Do you think this will be finished for the VW Nationals in May?
Cheers

Hey Dino. Probably not - but I might bring the rolling pan with motor, transmission and driveline to the Nationals so people can see it all.
What happenned to you...you went AWOL. I gave your free gearbox away. _________________ http://www.subarugears.com |

So...Monday I finally got the body out of my garage and onto a trailer.
It has safely made it to Steelart fabrications in QLD so that it can be fitted to the pan and the exoskeleton built.
I have had some interesting developments with my 4WD Subaru transmission. In developing the solution for the VW Syncro, I realised that I can have the 4WD output exiting at the lower part of the transmission front, rather than the upper part. The eliminates the transfer gears and upper yoke, thus shortening the 4WD transmission (particularly the upper part). This will mean less cutting of the pan metalwork to make it fit. (still have to cut the torsion bar though).
It also means the driveshaft through the tunnel will spin in the opposite direction. This means I no longer need to flip the front differential casing and so it should be even easier to fit a Subaru r160 rear differential in the front of a beetle pan.
This will make sense when I show the prototype on here soon. And even more sense when we start to mockup the drivetrain into the pan. Again. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

So...some more work on the WRManX has happened over at Steelart.
Some heavy duty floorpans - now shortened.
Seat runners removed
Floors mocked up on tunnel
MX5 / Miata Seat bases mocked up

Doing some mocking up of rear roll cage hoop on the body.
The challenge will be to make the front hoop close to the windscreen frame, passing through the dash and then all tieing in together. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Dave Barrett put his windshields inside the front hoop, the legs of which pass through the body/dash.

Not in Australia. We need to have our windshields in it's own windshield frame. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions
