Hello,

This isn't my normal forum, but I wanted to let anyone interested to know that Always Vdub in Portland, OR had a nice Kubel they're working on right now.
I went there last night to get a part for my 61 Double Cab and saw it in the garage. I took a quick look, pretty nice. It's the first one I'd seen in person.

Sorry no camera, but it'll be there for a few more days if anyone wants to take a look.

Chris

Chris - thanks for the comments. I purchased this '43 Kubel last fall from the elderly gentleman in the south Bay Area who brought it over from Germany in the late 60's. It had a wonderful restoration, completed in 1970, but had not been driven since the mid 80's. The original owner was able to find a mechanic who had actually worked at the VW plant in Wolfsburg on the Kubel assembly line, so he had a great advantage. Of course there was no internet back then and parts were almost impossible to come up with. So some of my favorite parts of the vehicle are the improvisions. Did you notice the hand carved wood horn button, stained black? This Kubel was set up to meet all current California licensing requirements at the time, so you will see the beautifully crafted wrought iron bumpers. During the original restoration it was fitted with semaphores, but drivers were not accustomed to looking for them, so turn signals were then wired in. The seats are the other modification, but this Kubel was meant for serious joy rides, and comfort is always appreciated, so I'm going to keep them. Stop by and we will take it out for a ride!

Going up for sale shortly. I had not driven it for four years. Just too nice to let sit. Need to get a few things sorted and then detailed before listing. Still trying to get a feel for pricing.
