I believe someone in the uk has repro'd westy hitches, but I'm not sure if they have done barndoor ones. I can't remember who it is right now though

Tanaka... I have a Westfalia tow bar from 1959. I think it should be more or less the same construction for barndoor! I can take measures and pictures if you like.

There were other German trailer and tow hitch manufacturers who at the time offered tow hitches for Barndoor buses. I have a HAHN (Stuttgart) tow hitch on my ´53 Kombi.
But again: very, very hard to find.

Thanks for the warm words.

BTW: The HAHN 179.1 tow hitch was also suitable for NON rear bumper buses. Here is a ´52 equipped with the HAHN tow hitch.

I believe the westfalia tow hitch for wolfsburg bus fits through mid 56, not just barndoor.
Here is one on Greg's post BD 55 westy:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?...t_dir=DESC

there is a different version for mid 56 through end of pressed bumper, then another for 59 -67
