Due to prices and such, I may have to go with a 165/80R15 for a new set of tires instead of the pricey 165R15.

Question is this....Will this work on my 79 Convertible with the standard sport wheel? Will it affect anything at all?

Thanks for your help.

T.

Think A 165R15 is really a 165 78R15...So you'd go from an aspect ratio(determines sidewall height)of 78 to an aspect ratio of 80,or from a tire thats 25.13" tall to a tire thats 25.39" tall...I don't know...

I thought a 165R15 was actuall a 82 aspect (not that it makes much differance.

The 185's will fit on your wheels fine, just a tiny bit oversized over stock tyre size, nothting to worry about

you might like to use this also http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Very Happy

The stock tire diameter on a 4.0Jx15 rim is 25.63 inches, plus or minus .24 inches. Thats according to the Robert Bentley Manual for Volkswagen Beetle 1966 - 1969 page 5-48. I assume that the tire diameter specified by VW remained the same throughout the following years. The differences being the width of the later 4.5Jx15 and 5.5Jx15 rims.

A tire of 165/80R15 has a diameter of 25.39". That is the minimum diameter specifed by VW.

195/65R15 diameter = 24.98"
205/65R15 diameter = 25.49"
