well how wide are those fenders on the gasser? if you could find the width of those then you might know the answer possibly.Looks like the rear ones still stick out some though.

I thought the wheels on the purp bug looked wider that 4's & 7's guess they just have some more positive offset than I am used to seeing. There is no way I am running some goofy 70's drag flared fenders on my 61 rag, the wheels would look sick if they would fit. Maybe if they catch on for the street they will open up the sizes?

Actually there is no way I'd run them either if I wasn't building a gasser. Wink

Nah, no worries. I wonldn't run them on a street car either. But they're perfect for the gasser look. A straight axle 55 chev is hot!

Wish they offered a 15 X 4.5 front with 2.75 backspace and a 16 X 7 rear with 3.75 inch backspace. I bet they could sell alot more.

You have to remember these wheels were built for offroad. Where you need the offset. Minimal backspacing is key in the dirt. It's needed to keep the tires away from trailing arms, shocks, and some times the body to maximize wheel travel. Not to mention wider track for stability.

I bet if the guys at BTR saw us sticking them under slammed busses, drag cars and other street cars they'd be scratching their heads in confusion. But hey, their a bitchen looking wheel. Maybe we can convince them to put out a more street friendly spacing and sizing setup.

JDGas,

You car is REALLY lookin' sweet ! ! ! All of the perfect vintage GASSER touches like the side scoops and that HOOD ! ! !

We're in the middle of doing a similar car for the Nostalgia Drag series here in New England. Couldn't find that hood, but since we're running a fiberglass tilt nose, we're grafiting the "pockets" from an old BAJA hood into the hood area on the tilt. Same PISSA look.

Wondering where you found those scoops for behind the rear side windows? Can't find the used, and haven't found them new either. Did you make your own?

Thanks,

TC

Thanks. I am never home so I don't ever get to work on it. I work out of town and only come for about a week in a two month period. So it is a very long process. I have had the car for about 2 1/2 years and have been gathering parts for about 4 years. Just can't seem to get all the parts bolted together on fout tires.

The scoops are actually and NOS item from the 70's. I bought them still in their original plastic bag with instruction. I paid less that $40 to my door. Bought right here on the samba.

Just last week a guy was selling a pair that he claimed to be original EMPI for about $75 I think. But they have sold. I didn't know how to tell if they were in fact og EMPI, so I passed on them. They come up on here from time to time.

Here is a picture when I first took the scopes out of the bag.

because the bolts on the lock ring can become loose if they are not checked, you can imagine what would happen if the lock ring came off at speed, right? we run them all over the street here in nevada on our jeeps, but the cops here are not that smart on them due to the amount of the fake locks. there are some dot approved bead locks out there in the off road community

And you know the avarage joe street driver would not check his locks as often (or at all) as off-roaders do. Every time it comes off the trailer, check lugs and lock bolts. I've been in a car that lost a front tire due to lose lock bolts. Not fun, at least it was in the sand.

BTR's are real beadlocks and therefore illegal for street use in California. You might get away with it up north, but the south state cops are getting wise to this and seem to now know what to look for. It'll really suck to kick out $1k on a set of locks only to get busted and not be able to use them. Plus I have to agree on not know how well they'll look.

I bought a set of BTR non-locks for this very reason. They look close to original Halibrands used on dragsters in the early days. I am planning to use as one of the wheel sets for my vintage gasser project.

As far a street goes, I've only seen them on busses. And they look killer in my mind! Also a gasser in Europe is sporting them too.

The top bus was mine and I sold the wheels for the DC. They WILL NOT fit on the front or rear of a stock beetle.

My bus had a 4" narrowed beam and the rear was narrowed 4 inchs also to get the BTR's to fit. Beadlocks would not fit on the rear. I also have a set ordered for this bus

I'm tired of the OG sprints and am doing a few cosmedic and an engine change to the DC. I think the BTR's will give it more of the LOOK I'm after

Also BTR's are pretty hard to find. Once they arrive 2000 wheels are gone in less then 2 weeks (non bead lock) I am a BTR dealer and was the first to ever get them to fit on a bus.
